Under the vehicle naming scheme maintained by Mercedes-Benz, SUVs use the base name “GL”, followed by the model’s placement in Mercedes-Benz hierarchy. The “G” is for Geländewagen (German for off-road vehicle) and alludes to the long-running G-Class.
