DAF XF105 Review

Scania may be the go to for owner-drivers and haulage firms who regularly send loads off across the world (arguably with the German manufacturers other Swedish companies like Volvo the closest rivals), but in TruckLocator's opinion it would be foolish to write off the 105. The Dutch manufacturer's trucks are more cost effective than Scanias, Volvos and the like; not just in terms of initial purchase, but in cost to run too.

Typical Used DAF XF105 - Here is an example from 2008

DAF is award-winning across the board, but none of its trucks has gained more silverware than the XF105. DAF's flagship truck, the 105 is possibly the perfect vehicle for long haulage, national and international transport, and is a genuine contender to some of the big Scanias for many firms.

The excellent PACCAR MX engine under the hood (12.9 litre) isn't too thirsty compared to some of the other trucks in its class, which means that it's perfect for owner-drivers. The cab is huge, and extremely comfortable, so globetrotting should be pretty straightforward in a 105. In fact, on its introduction in 2006, the XF105 had the biggest cab available, and with an interior design revamp two years later, the models post-2009 are probably the best you can get from any manufacturer if comfort is your priority.

DAF's engines are among the best in the world, and are produced by parent company PACCAR. The 12.9 MX engine does an excellent job of balancing performance and power, and produces significantly less CO2 than most of the other trucks in its class. The 105 is a reliable fleet tractor unit - check out all DAF Tractor Units here , with a variety of customisations available (as you'd expect from DAF). Available in a choice of three 6x2 rigids, a 6x4 chassis, an 8x2 and an 8x4 double drive chassis; the XF series are best used for heavy haulage, with most of the configurations suitable for this.

Air suspension makes the ride safer and more comfortable - it comes as standard on all of the trailing axle variants, but is optional at the front, so make sure you check carefully when you're looking at a potential purchase. In a nutshell The plucky upstart in heavyweight trucking, the DAF 105 is perfect for long distance applications; economical, comfortable and with plenty of power.

The new Euro 6 XF range was launched in the UK back in 2014 with a reworked cab and driveline.
