DAF XF95 Review

Since its introduction in 1997, the XF series has been all about durability, reliability and comfort. Arguably a ‘no frills' alternative to the Swedish and German heavyweight trucks, the 95 is still kitted out with one of the best interiors on the market - even since it went out of production in 2006.

DAF 95XF - Same cab shell used today

The XF95 - more commonly known simply as the 95 - was DAF's flagship truck from 1997 until 2006, when the 105 replaced it. The XF105 was a huge leap forward, and features the biggest cab on the market, so you know what you're getting with its predecessor: lavish comfort, a big engine, and a good quality long distance truck; only slightly less so and for slightly cheaper.

The main difference between the XFs on paper is the engine: the 95 features a 12.6 litre EX Euro 3 engine, compared to the 105's Euro 4 MX engine (which, in the later models is up to 12.9 litre). The emissions are up slightly, and the economy is down slightly, but, as with any DAF, you can be sure that the balance between economy and performance is already pretty good.

Since its introduction in 1997, the XF series has been all about durability, reliability and comfort. Arguably a ‘no frills' alternative to the Swedish and German heavyweight trucks, the 95 is still kitted out with one of the best interiors on the market - even since it went out of production in 2006.

DAF's network of dealers is huge, and the service is excellent, so the fact that you're guaranteed to be purchasing a slightly older truck (as mentioned above, the last 95 was built in 2006) shouldn't put you off from a maintenance perspective. The 105 features more gadgets and is more economical; however it's likely to cost you a little more for the initial purchase: we'd still recommend the 95's bigger replacement if you can afford it.

As with any DAF, it's worth noting that the engine is still fantastic, despite its relative age. The 12.6 litre EX under the hood is produced by DAF's parent company PACCAR.

The EX kicks out 280kW/530hp, and should still be among the most economical available for larger trucks - arguably the engine was one of the driving factors behind the 95 winning ‘International Truck of the Year 1998'.

    XF95 In a Nutshell

The 95 is a solid, reliable truck, with a great engine, but you can't get one that's newer than 12 years old. If you're after the ultimate in comfort and performance, and you don't want a Swedish or German truck, go for the 95's successor, the XF105 .
