Iveco trakker Truck Review

Automatic gear boxes have been slow to catch on in the off-road market but new technology has seen better boxes appear and they are beginning to be more accepted. The Trakker Hi-Track tipper still offers a choice of manuals, with 9- and 16-speed ZF boxes available, but the standard Eurotronic 12 AS 2330 TO system offers exemplary service.

Iveco's Trakker Hi-Track tipper comes in a huge range of 4×4, 6×4, 6×6, 8×4 and 8×8 rigid versions. In addition to these choices, Trakker Hi-Track tipper customers get the option of either the 7.8 litre Cursor 8 or 12.8 litre Cursor 13 engines. These are tuned to offer 310hp and 500hp respectively. Both engines adhere to Euro 5 standards.

The Cursor 13 is a straight-six power plant with a single overhead cam and deploying four valves per cylinder. Aluminium piston heads improve heat dispersal and smooth cylinder liners and specialised piston rings reduce friction levels. The fuel-injected unit delivers its maximum power over the 1,380rpm to 1,900rpm range, while top torque comes along between 900rpm and 1,380rpm.

This gives good acceleration characteristics when fully loaded. It is an eager and lively engine, pulling away smartly and moving up through the gears with gusto. Drivers will also like its quiet performance.

This operates with a single-plate 432mm clutch, overdrive and direct drive 11th gear. Top ratio is 0.78:1. This unit clearly has updated programming and maintains low gear well on slow and rough site ground. It is also more than capable out on the open road. Manual intervention might improve performance fractionally in some situations, but the driver can safely leave the Eurotronic to take care of business for something like 99.9% of cog changes.

The Meritor MT23-155 axles are single reduction units with both inter- and cross-axle differential locks. The drive axles have a ratio of 3.78:1. These are highly capable units, even under heavy tipper loads, and deliver quiet and sure performance from the site track to motorway cruises. The Iveco Trakker Hi-Track tipper benefits from a robust 7.7mm thick chassis. This sturdy foundation is of a ladder construction and boasts bolted and riveted cross members. This structure holds the (optional) aluminium air tanks, a 280 litre aluminium diesel tank and 55 litre AdBlue tank. As always with Iveco, the component layout is top-notch, with everything being both well protected and easy to access. Suspension comes by way of parabolic springs, aided by shock absorbers and anti-roll bars. Steering is, of course, power-assisted and is well weighted, giving predictable response across all speed ranges.

The stopping power is provided by full-air electrically operated brakes with ventilated discs all round. ABS is provided as standard, with ASR traction control available as an option for those who intend to tackle more arduous site roads. The ZF Intarder system makes those service units all but redundant in normal use.

Inside the cab, the driver's seat remains one of the best on the market and the instrument layout is good. The multi-function steering wheel is refreshingly uncluttered. Three cab options include the Hi-Land day cab with standard height and a Hi-Track sleeper with a choice of standard or high roof. Throughout the cab, the quality of the fixtures and fittings reflect the tough working life of the tipper and are both hard-wearing and easy to clean.

Iveco has led the eight-wheeled tipper sector in the UK for several years now, building on a heritage stretching all the way back to the days of the ‘Maggie D' Magirus-Deutz 232. The Trakker Hi-Track tipper builds on those foundations of good payload, robust construction and rock-solid reliability, delivering a very capable truck.
