    About The Volvo FH16

Volvo first introduced the FH range of trucks in 1993. The FH16 was there at the very beginning and remains in production to this day, which illustrates the popularity and longevity of the model group. The heavy-duty FH16 is available in low, medium, high, and X-High chassis heights ranging from 850 to 1,200 millimetres (33.5 to 47.2 inches) and in axle configurations ranging from 4x2 to 10x4. Volvo also offers the option for customers to order a five-axle FH16 directly from the factory for those who need to haul particularly heavy loads.

There are several other components customers can choose to get just the right specification, including a range of rear suspensions, coupling heights, fuel tanks, fifth wheels, and more. There is also the option to add a Tandem Axle Lift feature where the rearmost drive axle disengages when the trailer or body is empty, which Volvo says improves the turning radius and fuel efficiency of the truck. When buying a used model, be sure to check with the dealer to see which of these features are included.

    Cab & Interior Features

Like the overall FH range, FH16s are built for long-haul transport, and Volvo offers four cab options with interior heights of between 147 and 220 centimetres (58 and 87 inches) from the low sleeper cab to the Globetrotter XL cab. The two standard sleeper cabs have space for one bed, while the Globetrotter and Globetrotter XL cabs have room for either one or two beds, making them ideal for team driving scenarios. FH16 models also feature ample storage with shelves, large storage compartments on the driver and passenger sides, and additional space underneath the bed.

Other interior features include an adjustable steering wheel and adjustable seat, electronic climate control with air quality sensors, a fixed sky window with an option for a roof hatch, and a control panel in the sleeper compartment that puts control of important functions at the operator’s fingertips. Over the years, Volvo has added many other driver comfort features, including I-Park Cool, a built-in cooling system that runs even while the engine is off with maximum efficiency. Volvo also offers a range of equipment packages focused on long-haul operations, resting, active safety, visibility, audio, airflow, and much more.

    Engines & Transmissions

Newer Volvo FH16 trucks come standard with 16-litre D16K Euro 6 engines that produce between 550 and 750 horsepower (410 and 560 kilowatts) and between 2,800 and 3,550 newton metres (2,065 and 2,618 pounds-foot) of torque. They also feature I-Shift transmissions with automated gear-changing systems designed for smoother shifting. I-Shift gearboxes are available with several software packages tailored to specific applications or industries, including distribution, construction, long-haul, and heavy-duty transport. Again, it’s important to check a used FH16’s exact specifications to determine the engine and gearbox type to ensure they meet your needs.

    Driver Assistance & Safety Features

While improving performance and efficiency have been points of emphasis for Volvo while refining the FH16 over the years, the company has also added a range of driver assistance and safety features designed to make the truck easier and safer to operate. One example is the I-See intelligent cruise control system, which uses topographical data to help the vehicle more efficiently climb and descend hills. Another example is Volvo Dynamic Steering, which uses an electric motor to make steering adjustments and help the driver keep the truck on course.

Other standard or optional assistance and safety technologies include adaptive cruise control with collision warning and emergency brake, lane keeping support and lane changing support, driver alert support, ESC (electronic stability control), and more.
