Volvo FH 460 Euro 6 Review

Typical Used Volvo FH460 Euro 6

The Volvo FH 460 is sure to be on the short list of most large fleet buyers looking for a prime mover in this sector, especially in its 6x2 3900mm wheelbase guise. The 460hp engine is reckoned to be much the same as the Euro 5 unit, with just the emissions levels being altered. One pleasant surprise when it comes to differences is the noise level. An advertised feature or not, it is certainly a quiet beast. Even when pressed hard, there is little discernible noise coming from that power plant below. Physically, there seems to be little difference. It is still a straight-six turbo unit, with all the ancillary equipment exactly where you would expect to find it in the old model.

    Volvo Euro 6 Power

The engine produces its maximum 460hp between 1,400rpm and 1,800rpm, with delivery just as smooth as you would want. The maximum torque of 2,330Nm, meanwhile, comes along in the range between 1,000rpm and 1,400rpm. If there is any difference in performance, it is that the new engine feels a little livelier that the unit it is replacing. Although still a single turbo unit, it is more than capable of revving right down before changing gear. Volvo says that fuel efficiency should be a little better, but the 1% difference claimed is going to be hard to measure except by the most observant of drivers. The likely increase in AdBlue levels will probably negate any savings in any case.

EGR and SCR for Euro 6

Similar to the Euro 5 engines, this Euro 6 version uses SCR to achieve its compliance and adds an uncooled exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR) to help it along. A diesel particulate filter, oxidation catalyst and ammonia slip catalyst are also included in the muffler. All this technology has bloated the silencer, which now takes up more space on the chassis. This could force those operators needing a PTO or other additional kit to opt for a longer wheelbase. Volvo's I-Shift AT2612D gearbox is married to a 430mm single-plate clutch and this unit still leads the way in automatic transmission systems. It can be left to do its job by even the most fastidious driver, with manual interventions seeming more and more a thing of the past. The cog changes are uniformly smooth and perfectly timed, occurring just at the instant you would reach for the lever yourself. Volvo's lauded Eco Roll system is still present, disconnecting the main shaft and allowing the truck's momentum to carry it forward whenever it can.

The Volvo FH 460 handles well too. The steering delivers good feedback and is precise enough to allow the driver to place the truck exactly where he wants to have it on the road. The suspension comes by way of the standard rear air and front steel configuration, where the front parabolic leafs are aided by a standard anti-roll bar and shocker set-up. At the tail, the air units boast automatic self-levelling and an adjustable height feature for attaching trailers. A four-setting engine brake helps keep the service units fresh for those unforeseen incidents requiring a sterner deceleration. The service units are discs all round and boast all the usual ABS-style paraphernalia that we have come to expect.

The Globetrotter XL cab has been redesigned to offer even better comfort and visibility. An endlessly adjustable steering wheel and driver's seat guarantee a comfortable ride, while the lowered windscreen and side windows offer unmatched visibility. A skylight lets light flood in, adding to the airy feel, and that quiet engine makes a day in the Volvo FH 460 a pleasure.
