ERF's Timeline

ERF Established
ERF is established by Edwin Richard Foden, whose name the company bears. Foden designed the first steam wagon to run on steel tyre wheels in 1898, which was a huge success and greatly influenced the design of future trucks. Foden, with the help of his son, Dennis, designed and built the first diesel lorry, which went into production as the first ERF truck in 1933.

Founder Passes Away
Edwin Richard Foden passes away at the age of 80 and Dennis becomes Managing Director of ERF. The company goes public four years later.

ERF EC Range Introduced
The C Series is introduced, based on the B Series from 1974 came with a choice of Cummins engines

E Series Launched

The E Series could be fitted with either a Cummins or Rolls Royce (to become Perkins) The model numbers denoted the engine size, for example the E10 would be the Cummins L10 10-litre version.

EC Range Launched

The EC range is introduced in May 1993 and soon becomes ERF’s highest selling product ever. The company invests £14 million in order to develop the new tractor and rigid truck range.

ERF Bought by Western Star
The company is purchased by Canadian group Western Star for £27.4 million, with some ERFs bearing the Western Star badge in Australia and other countries.
01.03.2000
ERF Bought by MAN
ERF again changes hands, this time purchased by MAN, a leading German truck manufacturer.
