In XL layout and Comfort trim, it is a pretty good place for any driver to earn his living. Inside the cab you will find an air-suspended driver's seat and plenty of storage. Units under the bunk, above the windscreen and above the top bunk provide particularly capacious bins. The controls are well placed and fall easily to hand, with often used units such as the I-Shift and handbrake levers being placed closest to the driver.
Out on the road, the Volvo FH 480 boasts a line-up that includes that I-Shift unit, ECOROLL, VEB and cruise control to contribute to a smooth and easy drive. Drivers can choose options such as the fuel economy and long-haul programmes, which work effortlessly to maximise economy and keep the engine well within the green band. The I-Shift unit is so efficient that it can be left to organise the cog changes 100% of the time. Where the driver is tempted to coax the system by anticipating an upcoming incline, the system is so fast that it can be relied upon to change the instant it encounters any hill.
The engine brake is operated via a right-hand steering wheel stalk and this unit offers four settings. The first works alongside the cruise-control function to keep you within 7 kmph of your chosen speed. The next three settings simply increase the stopping power. Nowadays Volvo and other manufacturers offer much more powerful engines, but 10hp per tonne is still a decent rule of thumb and the Volvo FH 480's 480hp is more than ample. This six-cylinder engine displaces 12.8 litres and comes in a choice of power ratings, from 400 to 520hp. This unit is still one of the best on the market. It is quiet and well balanced, with rear-mounted timing gears and Volvo's superb build quality resulting in a refined power plant.
This Euro 5 engine is wedded to a 12-speed V2512AT gearbox, with ratios from 14.94 to 1.00:1. The power steering is superbly weighted and the driver receives good feedback from the smaller than average steering wheel. Handling is precise and the big truck can be placed with pinpoint accuracy on the road, giving a real feeling of confidence.
The Volvo FH 480 also has a nice touch when it comes to the horn. Small buttons mounted towards the outside of the steering wheel give a nice friendly peep, ideal when manoeuvring in yards to give a warning of your intentions, or in town around pedestrians. If that doesn't achieve the required results, however, simply press the Volvo logo in the middle of the wheel for a full-blown blast of noise that will let everyone know you are there.
The Volvo FH 480 provides a great combination of space and driver comfort, coupled to superb engineering and fine residuals. It is a top truck that will serve for some years to come.
