Isuzu Truck UK To Expand 3.5-Tonne Grafter Truck Lineup Following 2020 Sales Growth

Isuzu Truck UK recently announced several new updates coming to the 3.5-tonne Grafter range in 2021, including new transmission, suspension, and warranty options. (Photo courtesy of Isuzu.)

Isuzu Truck UK sold 17.3% more 3.5-tonne (3.9-U.S.-ton) vehicles in 2020 than in 2019 and the firm is looking to keep that momentum going by expanding its popular Grafter range in 2021. One example is that the 120-horsepower (89-kilowatt) Grafter now has the option for a six-speed automatic gearbox in addition to the existing manual transmission. Higher-powered Grafters will still come standard with Easyshift semi-automatic transmissions.

Another example is the Isuzu Grafter N35.125 (A) 6D Temp chassis, which will now be available with single or twin rear wheels and an Aisin AWR6B46 six-speed automatic transmission. Because the Aisin transmission weighs 35 kilograms (77 pounds) less than the previous iteration, it brings the kerb weight of a typical Grafter down to 1,765 kg (3,891 lbs).

Grafters produced in 2021 will still be covered by three-year unlimited mileage warranties, but there will also be an option to add an extended warranty lasting either four or five years. Those warranties will come with limited mileage figures, however, of either 12,500, 18,750, or 25,000 miles (20,117, 30,175, or 40,234 kilometres) per year.

    New Updates, Same Versatility

Along with the transmission and warranty options, Isuzu also updated the suspension of the Grafter to improve the smoothness of the ride. This is particularly important because in addition to a chassis cab, this 3.5-tonner is also available as dropside or tipper truck right out of the factory, making it ideal for more rugged construction applications. In fact, the Grafter tipper is so popular that sales in the construction segment rose 44% in 2020.

High-Performance, Lightweight & Easy To Drive

“In co-operation with our colleagues in Japan, we have been able to refine the driving performance, reliability, and efficiency of this range, but keeping our unique forward cab design,” says Richard Waterworth, head of sales for Isuzu Truck UK. “Not only does the fully automatic gearbox now make the Grafter even easier to drive, especially within urban environments where it works at its best, but it is now even lighter in weight than its predecessor, whilst offering further improved driving performance as well as reduced emissions.”
