Renault C520 Off Road Truck Shoulders The Load For Morecambe Metals
Morecambe Metals Ltd, a scrap metal recycling and processing business serving domestic and commercial customers, has seen an increase in workload, which required a new addition to its fleet of trucks. After receiving positive reviews from another local business, Morecambe Metals opted for a Renault Trucks C520 8x4 Off Road with a Hyva Titan hook loader body. The new truck pulls a tri-axle Muldoon roll-on roll-off hook bin trailer. This 7-axle combination follows the addition of a D18 skip loader Morecambe acquired in June 2023.
The C520 operates out of Morecambe Metals’ depot in Morecambe, running routes in the North West from Stoke-on-Trent to Carlisle and across to Leeds to deliver and collect all grades of ferrous and non-ferrous metals in 20- to 50-yard roll-on roll-off bins from scrap and waste recycling facilities, factories, and farms.
“The new vehicle and trailer combination boasts seven axles and is capable of operating at a maximum gross weight of 44 tonnes, making it ideally suited to our work,” says Morecambe Metals Commercial Manager William De Carvalho. “It offers good ground clearance for the range of sites we visit, along with all-round good visibility and weight carrying capability, combined with driver comfort for long motorway journeys.”
Renault C520 Specs & Features
The C520 has a 13-litre engine with 2,550 newton-metres of maximum torque from 990 to 1400 rpm and the 12-speed Optidriver AT 2612 gearbox with automatic clutch. The truck has a 4-point cab air suspension with a ride-height control system, a leather steering wheel with cruise control and hands-free telephone control, a removable refrigerated bottle holder, multi-compartment storage on the engine tunnel, and a cab air blower. The cab’s audio system has been upgraded with two loudspeakers and two tweeters.
The truck’s radar detection and camera system and automatic headlights and windscreen wipers improve visibility. Other safety features include driver fatigue detection, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, hill start assist, and speed assistance systems.
Renault’s Range C trucks have an inter-wheel and inter-axle differential lock, ground clearance of 312 millimetres (12.3 inches) under the front axle and as much as 440 mm (17.3 in.) under the tank, and Off Road mode to optimise gear changes. The C range 8x4 tridem straight truck can carry up to 9 tonnes (9.9 U.S. tons) and has a turning radius up to 15% shorter than a standard 8x4.
