Volvo FM Makes First-Time Volvo Buyer CT Glass A Believer
Independent glass manufacturer CT Glass is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of toughened and laminated glass and heat-soaked and heat-strengthened glass products. To support its operations, the Bradford-based company recently acquired its first-ever Volvo trucks, two FM 380 6x2 rear-steer rigid curtainsiders. The FMs replace models from a different marque and will deliver glass products throughout the UK.
A Reputation Well-Earned
“The decision to go with Volvo came down to the strength of the brand and the way we were looked after throughout the buying process,” says CT Glass Transport Manager Paul Smithson. “The FMs have come in and done exactly what we hoped for, delivering strong fuel economy, a comfortable cab, and features the drivers really value. The first vehicle set a strong benchmark, and the second has followed the same path, which gives us real confidence as we look toward future replacements.”
Safety First
To keep drivers and other road users safe, the FM is loaded with features to alert drivers to potential dangers. The Front Short Range Assist uses the front radar and camera to detect road users in the front risk area when the truck is at a standstill or speeds up to 10 km/h. Side Collision Avoidance Support uses radar sensors to detect vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists on the sides of the truck and warns with a flashing light, audible alert, and active steering guidance, if needed. The Door Opening Warning scans the sides of the truck with radar sensors to detect potential dangers when opening the cab doors.
Built For Challenging Environments
The 380-horsepower (280-kilowatt) FMs have Volvo’s 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox technology, which gathers and evaluates the weight, speed, torque demand, and road grade to ensure every shift is performed with precision, adjusting revs and brakes to maximise performance. The hydraulically steered rear tag axles help the lorries navigate tight urban locations and restricted-access delivery stops.
The spacious Globetrotter cabs are fitted with leather upholstery, a microwave, and a power roof hatch with tinted glass to keep drivers comfortable. The FMs will operate Monday through Friday, making four to five deliveries each day and logging up to 80,000 kilometres (49,700 miles) per year.
“We’re regularly delivering into urban locations that are tricky to navigate,” Smithson says. “The rear-steer setup makes a big difference for the work we do. Having that extra flexibility helps the drivers handle restricted spaces safely and with far less stress.”
