Nooteboom Mega Windmill Trailer XXL’s Stability Impresses Silvasti CEO
Silvasti Transport CEO Ville Silvasti knows more than most about hauling wind turbine components. Headquartered in Jyväskylä, Finland, his firm specialises in heavy transport for wind power and project logistics, and has relied on Nooteboom Trailers’ Mega Windmill Trailer range for decades, purchasing roughly 25 of the trailers over the years. That said, Silvasti says the new Mega Windmill Trailer XXL (MWT-XXL) strikes a different note—despite appearing familiar at first glance.
“Our first impression was that, at first glance, there were only small differences compared to the previous MWT,” Silvasti says. “But those small differences are exactly what make the big impact. The improvements are mainly constructional, and that’s actually a very good thing.”
Evolution Of The Mega Windmill Trailer
Nooteboom Trailers, a family-owned Dutch company based in Wijchen, introduced the first Mega Windmill Trailer (MWT) in 2003. It later responded to ever-larger wind turbine tower sections with the MWT-XL. The third-generation MWT-XXL was unveiled in January 2025 and displayed at the 2025 Bauma trade show in Munich. Shortly after the show, Nooteboom delivered two MWT-XXLs to Silvasti.
“Over the years, we’ve used different trailer types and brands, but we also did a proper technical evaluation of the construction and stability,” says Silvasti. “The basic idea behind the Nooteboom design is very clever: the frame is stable and very well thought out. When Nooteboom came up with the MWT-XXL, with those key improvements, especially for the stability of the rear dolly, it was exactly what we had been looking for.”
A Wide Range Of Loads Supported
Nooteboom designs and builds transport solutions with payload capacities from 20 to 200 tonnes (22 to 220 U.S. tons), including semi-trailers, low loaders, drawbar trailers, and semi-low loaders. The MWT-XXL sits within the company’s Specials lineup and can transport wind turbine tower sections with inner diameters ranging from approximately 2,850 to 6,100 millimetres (112 to 240 inches), with weights of up to around 100 t (110 U.S. t).
The MWT-XXL can be loaded without a loading floor or cranes. It features a double, hydraulically height-adjustable A-frame and a three-point clamping system and can also support smaller-diameter tower sections and turbine nacelles. Nooteboom includes a 2.84-metre (9.3-foot)-wide self-steered dolly and offers an optional 2.55-m (8.4-ft)-wide version for smaller-diameter loads. Adjustable hooks that clamp to the tower base are also available.
The Perfect Combination
Silvasti says the MWT-XXL’s versatility and stability are standout characteristics.
“The trailer is even more stable than we expected,” he says. “Our drivers notice hardly any difference when moving towers from 4.5- or 6.5-m diameters. The biggest advantages are stability, light weight, and low maintenance costs. That combination is quite unique at the moment.”
