Western Fuel Puts Two Volvo FL 4x2 Rigids Into Service For Deliveries Across The South West

In transporting fuel to a wide customer base across the UK, Western Fuel demands a lot from its haulers. The Bridgwater-based fuel supplier recently added two 18-tonne (19.8-U.S.-ton) Volvo FL 4x2 rigid tankers to its fleet to deliver kerosene, diesel, and gas oil; these additions have been a big boost for the drivers.

"They tell me the Volvos feel far more solid than the trucks they were in before—and are very comfy, with a quality interior and fantastic power delivery,” says Western Fuel Transport Manager Lewis Hook.

    Reliability Is Key

Prior to purchasing the Volvo FL rigids, Western Fuel typically had selected a rival truck brand, yet the Bridgwater-based fuel supplier was intrigued by the team from Truck and Bus Wales and West.

"We knew Volvo was a robust and reliable product—which is exactly what we need,” Hook says. “And the lightweight chassis of the FL allows us to maximise payload. The new Truck and Bus Wales and West depot in Bridgwater is right on our doorstep and, after some initial conversations, we were really impressed with what they could offer us.”

The FL rigids are backed with an eight-year Volvo Gold Contract supported by Truck and Bus Wales and West. “We tend to run our trucks on an eight-year replacement cycle, and the fact they were happy to cater for us with the 96-month Gold Contract just shows the confidence they have in the product,” Hook adds.

    Volvo FL Range

Western Fuel’s new FL rigids came equipped with Volvo’s 250-horsepower (184-kilowatt) D8K engine, the second-most powerful option in available in the FL range. Other powertrain options include the D8K280 (280 HP, 206 kW) and D5K engines rated for 210 and 240 HP (154 and 177 kW). Volvo FL trucks are available in day cab, comfort cab, and crew cab configurations with gross vehicles weights ranging from 10 to 18 t. Each truck in the lineup is equipped with the I-Sync automated manual transmission, making it well-suited to operating in urban environments for delivery, waste management and recycling, and more.
