Gower Brewery Of South Wales Returns To The Dependability Of A FUSO Canter

Reliability and familiarity played significant roles in Gower Brewery’s recent decision to purchase a new 7.5-tonne (8.26-U.S.-ton) FUSO Canter light-duty truck. The new truck replaces a previous FUSO Canter that served the award-winning South Wales brewery faithfully since 2013 in making deliveries of its handcrafted, premium-quality ales. From Gower Brewery’s base in Penclawdd, the new Canter 7C15 will complete next-day deliveries of bottled, keg, and casket beer to pubs, smaller supermarkets, and other retailers located within a 129-kilometre (80-mile) radius. The brewery’s distribution area includes Gower Peninsula, the U.K.’s first designated Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

“Our first Canter was exceptionally good,” says Gower Brewery co-founder and Director Chris Mabbett. “We don’t cover huge mileages, but it never let us down. The previous Canter carried a full 4 t. Its heavier body means the new truck has a slightly reduced payload of 3.7 t, but that’s still a lot more than we’d get on most competitors’ chassis, and we’ll use it to the full.”

    Fit To Deliver

Distributed by Mercedes-Benz Trucks dealers in the UK, the FUSO Canter is also available in 3.5-, 6.5-, and 8.5-t (3.9, 7.2-, and 9.4-U.S.-t) weight classes. An apt delivery vehicle, the Canter also carries out construction, landscaping, and other tasks with aplomb. Gower Brewery’s new 7C15 Canter was provided by Euro Commercials, and is equipped with a cab-mounted air deflector, printed side curtains from Fred Smith & Sons, a Dhollandia column tail lift with a 1,000-kilogram (2,204-pound) capacity, and a CameraMatics 360-degree camera system that provides driver John Adams with excellent visibility all around the truck. The truck’s 3-litre common-rail turbo-diesel engine is rated for a maximum of 150 horsepower (110 kilowatts) and 370 newton-metres (273 pounds-foot) of torque.

“Some of the pubs we supply are on narrow streets to access, so the fact that the Canter is also a good bit smaller than other vehicles in its class and very agile, too, is another big advantage,” Mabbett says.

    The FUSO Canter

Daimler introduced the latest version of the FUSO Canter in August 2021, with a redesigned cab, an exhaust brake, Sideguard Assist technology, and much more. The Canter is available in five wheelbase lengths and with single, crew, or double cabs. The Canter’s load capacities range from 1.4 to 6 t (1.54 to 6.6 U.S. t). Various features include the five-speed DUONIC dual-clutch transmission, Eco Mode and Hill Start Assist, and a noise-insulated cab that, based on the specification, seats three to seven passengers.
