Crown Waste Management Puts 4 Volvo FMX Tippers To Work, With 12 More On The Way

Nuneaton-based Crown Waste Management recently began the process of overhauling its fleet with the acquisition of 16 Volvo FMX tippers. The FORS-accredited fleet previously consisted of a rival brand, but following the trial of a Volvo FMX demonstration truck from Volvo Truck and Bus Centre South & East, the firm made the decision to invest heavily in the Volvo FMX.

“When we tried our first Volvo it was clear from the outset that it was capable of everything promised and more,” says Crown Waste Management Managing Director Kash Chaudry. “Our drivers were particularly impressed by the technology onboard, and when combined with the truck’s fuel performance, it made for a very competitive package. As a result, they’ve been on our radar ever since.”

    The New Arrivals

Four of Crown Waste Management’s new Volvo FMX 420 8x4 tippers have already arrived and another 12 will join them over the next 18 months. Each of the new FMX tippers are equipped with a 420-horsepower (309-kilowatt) D13K engine that produces 2,100 newton-metres (1,549 pounds-foot). The rigids also came with Volvo’s 12-speed I-Shift transmission and tipper bodywork from Thompsons. Crown Waste Management spec’d the trucks with Volvo’s Active Safety+ package, which includes adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, and a lane departure warning system.

“The cab’s visibility and the vehicle’s overall manoeuvrability make the FMX an ideal match for our needs,” says Chaudry. “We’re an extremely busy operator that regularly works in demanding locations, but the FMX never misses a beat. We’re constantly impressed by what Volvo’s technology can handle.”

    The FMX Range

Volvo offers the FMX with D11K or D13K engines with power ratings from 330 to 540 HP (243 to 397 kW) and six cab sizes from low to crew. It also features Volvo’s Dynamic Steering system, a new traction control panel that gives drivers access to quick traction adjustments, and a 38-tonne (42-U.S.-ton) bogie that allows for gross combination weights (GCWs) of up to 150 t (165 U.S. t). The truck’s new digital dashboard features a 12-inch instrument display and a separate 9-in. side display for infotainment, navigation, transport, camera monitoring, and more.
