A C Services Returns To Volvo With New FM 460 Rigid Tipper

The UK’s High Speed 2 railway line will require massive amounts of aggregate, and A C Services purchased its new Volvo FM 460 tipper with the government project in mind, among other aggregate jobs for the Banbury-based haulage services provider. The firm has previously purchased used Volvo trucks, which had delivered excellent performance but didn’t possess the exact specification the firm would have liked.

“We’ve always seen Volvo as a premium brand, and our drivers wholeheartedly agree,” says A C Services Director Richard Coleman. “The two Volvos we’ve run before were very popular, but as they were second hand, they didn’t have the ideal spec we needed so it was very exciting to be able to go to town on a Volvo truck that fits our needs perfectly.”

    Driver-Friendly, With A Special Tribute

With its Globetrotter cab and Volvo’s I-Shift automated gearbox, the new FM 460 provides an ideal working environment for A C Services’ drivers. “When we were putting together our spec, driver comfort and happiness were the top priority, while we also wanted a truck that would turn heads when out on a job,” says Coleman.

The FM 460 is equipped with Swadlincote Aluminium tipper bodywork, which includes artwork displaying the vehicles of Coleman Transport—the former haulage company of Coleman’s late grandfather, who also founded A C Services.

“As we’re still a family-run business, when it came to designing our new truck’s livery it seemed a fitting tribute to their work to have those trucks pictured in pride and place,” Coleman says.

    More On The FM 460

Volvo’s FM series utilises Euro 6 D11K and D13K diesel engines available in 330- to 500-horsepower (243- to 368-kilowatt) power ratings. Volvo also offers powertrains that operate on LNG, biodiesel, and electric power. A C Services’ new truck features a D13K engine with 460 HP (338 kw) and a peak torque of 2,300 newton-metres (1,696 pounds-foot). The D13K engine also pairs with Volvo’s I-Shift technology to monitor the current speed, weight, road grade, and torque demand to intelligently time gear shifts.

A C Services is currently planning to add a second Volvo based on the current FM 460 configuration. “We’re looking at opting for a similar spec as our driver’s reaction has been very positive, and the truck’s fuel performance has been very strong and we only expect it to get better,” Coleman says.
