Johnsons Aggregates & Recycling Limited Adds To Scania-Heavy Fleet With New P 410 8x4 XT Tippers

Johnsons Aggregates and Recycling Limited is a leading producer of highly specialised Incinerator Bottom Ash Aggregate (IBAA) as well as a provider of aggregate recycling, site clearance, contract crushing, and disposal of contaminated materials services. Founded in 1999 and headquartered in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, the company strives to keep materials out of the landfill, and IBAA is a big part of that effort.

"As the energy from waste sector grew and developed, we could see potential in what is known as the Incinerator Bottom Ash, or IBA, left at the end of the incineration process," says Chief Executive Officer Lewis Johnson. "Rather than regard this as waste to be sent to landfill, we took the view that IBA had value as a resource. To realise that value, we developed a unique blending process which combines IBA with aggregate to create IBAA, a high quality, sustainable and low-cost product. That was back in 2007, and since then we have used our knowledge and experience to develop what is today widely recognised as Europe's most advanced IBA recycling facility."

Creating New Product To Reduce Waste

Johnsons begins the process by collecting IBA from waste facilities and then transporting it to its operating centres in Ilkeston and Bunny to certify the IBA as non-hazardous, at which point it can be recycled. Johnsons Aggregates and Recycling runs a fleet of 44 trucks, including 30 from Scania, to collect and deliver the products. The Scania trucks include 27 tippers and three articulated tractor units, which haul bulk trailers.

"At that point we have a product which can be sold back to our construction industry customers nationwide," says Lewis. "To date, we have processed in the region of a million tonnes of IBA and generated more than two million tonnes of IBAA – which also means we have diverted around a million tonnes of IBA from landfill."

    Keeping An Efficient Fleet

The company monitors its fleet with Scania’s telematics service, which provides weekly in-depth reports that cover trucks and drivers to help maximise efficiency and identify areas for improvement. Johnsons Aggregates and Recycling recently upgraded their tipper fleet to P 410 8x4 XT rigids with Thompson Multimaster bodies that allow the company to achieve a Transport for London Direct Vision Standard two-star rating for the trucks. The new vehicles are equipped with cameras to capture areas beyond the driver’s field of vision and Scania city safe windows fitted in the passenger door for increased visibility of people at the nearside of the truck.

    About The P 410 8x4 XT

The Scania P Series trucks have low-weight, low-mounted cabs for enhanced visibility and plenty of space within the cab for storage and easy movement. The front, sides, roof, and underbody, including corners, gaps, and angles, have all been designed to be more aerodynamic. Lighting has also been enhanced with position lights and extra lights built into the cab without negatively impacting aerodynamics.
