The Volvo FE has been around since 2006 and is now in its second generation. It is a medium-weight truck, ranging from 18 to 26 tonnes, and aimed at the local and regional distribution markets, light construction work and refrigerated distribution. It features a low cab entry, making it easy to get in and out and ideal for multi-drop work, where the driver has to make many entrances and exits. All-round visibility is first class and the FE is agile in manoeuvres. The seven-litre engine comes in 240, 260, 300 or 340hp power outputs.

Volvo FE - Tractor or Rigid?

The FE comes in both rigid and tractor configurations and in 4x2, 6x2 or 6x4 axle set-ups. There are four cabs to choose from: the low cab, day cab, comfort cab or sleeper cab. The truck competes in a busy market, going up against the likes of the DAF LF, Iveco Eurocargo and MAN TGL. The FE shares many design features with its little brother, the Volvo FL. You will find the no-nonsense look of rectangular grille and diagonal chrome flash common to all Volvo trucks. Aerodynamic concerns are foremost, with airflow panels, wheel covers and wind deflectors on the roof and sides all reducing drag.

    Volvo FE Interior

The no-nonsense approach extends to the cab interior, where you will find a chunky, squared-off look of solid rectangles. The build quality is clearly very good and would not shame the likes of Mercedes. The day cab is intended for short distances on local distribution duties, maximising space for the load platform. It is still decently spacious but the comfort cab is available for those looking for some more creature comforts. The sleeper version adds even more space and that comfortable bunk for overnight stops. The dashboard layout is simple, clean and clutter-free, with all main controls falling easily to hand even after just a brief familiarisation. The compact-looking multi-function steering wheel incorporates a host of controls for infotainment, cruise control and retarder.

An easily adjusted pneumatic driver's seat ensures a comfortable driving position and all seat options offer excellent support. The sleeper cab has a fixed bed with a 200x78x13.5cm mattress, while the comfort version is slightly narrower at 58cm. You will find lots of storage areas dotted around the cab and there is the option of a 28-litre fridge. A handy shelf above the windscreen has three DIN compartments and lots of room for additional electrical equipment.

    Drivetrain

Those engines are famously reliable and accelerate well even on steeper hills. They are pretty torquey too, with the 340hp version offering 1300Nm. These D7F engines use SCR and AdBlue to meet Euro 5 emissions regulations. They are coupled with six- or nine-speed manual gear boxes, which offer smooth shifting and precise response via a servo-assisted system. There is also the option of a six-speed auto box, which improves fuel consumption and is simply operated via push buttons on the engine tunnel.

The standard suspension set-up is parabolic leaf springs but there is also the option of the Volvo ECS (Electronically Controlled Suspension) set-up. This offers a more comfortable ride and was developed to handle more fragile loads. The system adjusts automatically to maintain a constant height and it also compensates for uneven loads. Stopping power comes from electronic disc brakes with Hill Start Aid, ABS and ESP. These service units are aided by an engine brake and the auto gearbox features an integrated retarder. Steering is predictable and smoothly graduated.

A combination of excellent build quality, comfortable cabs and being the safest truck in the sector makes the Volvo FE an excellent choice in this market segment.
