Construction-site delivery trucks have a tricky balancing act to pull off. They must be rugged enough to survive the demands of off-road work when working on site, but their payload capacity must still be high enough to earn enough cash back on the tarmac.
The Renault Premium Lander has been around for a good few years in this sector and the V2 brought things up to date rather nicely in 2008. Renault's Kerax range is, of course, the one to go for if you are looking at really heavy-duty off-road work, but the Lander is the one you should be looking at if you are talking about delivering to site and being able to cope with mucky site tracks but still be competent on road.
The Renault Premium Lander V2 6x4 tractor unit is a tough-looking unit and coupled to a step frame bathtub tipper trailer it is not a light truck, so don't expect any record mpg figures. What it is, though, is a really excellent package in this demanding sector and with the raised roof 2.2m sleeper cab it is also extremely flexible. The instrumentation and switchgear in the cab are well laid out in a compact set-up that is easy to get used to. Visibility is good too, with narrow 'A' pillars affording clear sight lines forward and to the rear-view mirrors. Access to the cab is by three graduated and well-placed steps. With a revised and friendly-looking front grille, it is an attractive cab from the outside also.
Fully loaded at 44 tonnes, the six-cylinder 450hp power plant still provides great pulling ability from the two drive axles. The DXi unit is Euro 4 compliant and gives you 2,140Nm of torque between 1,100 and 1,300rpm. It is not the largest unit for a truck such as this but still feels eager and capable. It has an automatic fast idle setting that kicks in after overnight stops to quickly boost air-reservoir pressure. This cuts out just as soon as you stick it in gear to pull away.
The engine is hooked up to a manual ZF 16-speed gearbox. The cable-operated box is assisted by a Servoshift unit and works well. The familiar range-change buttons fall easily to hand and the system has the usual 'double H' grid layout. It also features a 'change now' warning, which can be switched off if desired, but is actually pretty helpful at optimising your changes. However, there is seldom a need to change when cruising on the open road, due to that flexible torque delivery.
Suspension is provided by rugged all-round steel parabolic springs, with telescopic dampers at the front. Braking is by all-round discs, with air/electric assistance. It is one of the best systems you will find. There is also an engine retarder unit, activated via the steering-column lever.
Renault has long held a good reputation for tough off-road and construction delivery trucks and the Renault Premium Lander V2 only adds to that pedigree. It is an excellent all-rounder with no obvious faults and would make a good used purchase in this sector.
