Mercedes-Benz recently launched the second generation of its MirrorCam, the camera system that replaces traditional wide-angle rearview mirrors. The new MirrorCam features camera arms that are 10 centimetres shorter on each side, new image parameters, and an enhanced camera housing. Image information is expanded for a more realistic illustration of the surroundings. The second-generation MirrorCam is available now on Actros, Arocs, and eActros trucks.
“The intensive discussions with our customers and their experiences from day-to-day operations formed the foundations for us to make further adjustments to individual technical parameters, thereby generating even greater added value, especially in terms of display and safety,” says Mercedes-Benz Trucks Head of Product Development, Uwe Baake.
About MirrorCam
MirrorCam was first introduced in 2014 and entered series production in 2018. The technology eliminates the traditional main and wide-angle mirrors and instead relies on two cameras attached to the sides of the roof frame which relay the images to two portrait-format monitors attached to the cab’s A-pillars. The large, 15-inch monitors make it easier to judge the speed of a moving object. MirrorCam has a wide-angle mode for reversing, distance lines for assessing the distance to objects behind the truck, and panning for corners. The camera system also monitors the truck’s surroundings while on rest periods.
New & Improved
The new, shorter MirrorCam camera arms make it easier to reverse in a straight line and reduce the likelihood of collisions with objects. The redesigned camera arm housing reduces blocking of the camera lens from debris. Tone mapping, the process of adapting an image to improve contrast display with a large range of tones, has been improved and the brightness increased for a more accurate picture of the surroundings, even in poorly lit areas.
