The International Truck of the Year award is an important annual prize bestowed upon models from manufacturers that have managed to fulfil a number of key criteria, from efficiency and safety to comfort and convenience.

In 2017 is was Swedish firm Scania which walked away with the top prize for its new S series range. It was launched recently and received a lot of attention in the media thanks to the hype that had been developed in the build-up to the unveiling.

    Technology and Safety

scania s seriesA total of 25 expert judges were involved in the decision-making process, with representatives from a number of major press outlets coming together to select the truck most worthy of the award. And it was not just the new technology which helped to underline the win for the S series but also the extensive servicing packages that Scania offers customers to keep them on the road in the long run.

A spokesperson for the award, Gianenrico Griffini, said that the modern solutions associated with the S series meant that the latest trucks are fairly future-proof, benefiting from connected services to help manage and monitor entire fleets while also keeping track of individual vehicles.

He also said that the cab of the S series was set up in such a way that made it feel more like a car than an HGV, enhancing the experience for drivers and making manoeuvres easier to execute.

The interior dimensions of the cab were praised, with judges pointing out that drivers are given plenty of room to move, with the sleeper cab being a truly liveable space rather than one which is only suitable for short trips.

Safety was another element of the S series which helped it to earn the award, since it comes with curtain airbags on both the driver and passenger doors. Scania claims that it is currently the only manufacturer to have included such a feature on its trucks, putting it ahead of the game in terms of protecting truck drivers, passengers and other road users.

    Worked With Customers

scania truck of the yearScania spokesperson Henrik Henriksson said that the firm had spent a long time working with customers in order to formulate the design for the S series, and he argued that the award was a vindication of this potentially time-consuming method of developing a new truck line-up.

He also said that this award paid testament to the dedication and expertise of Scania's engineers while being a sign that Sweden was still an important country thanks to its manufacturing prowess and would continue to be competitive globally in a number of industries.

Scania will no doubt be celebrating the win not just because it signals that the hard work of thousands of employees has paid off, but also because it spent several billion pounds to create the new S series and R series trucks, which it will need to recoup over the coming years through sales and servicing. It is safe to say that these latest models have enjoyed the best possible start in life.
