The Mercedes Atego lightweight truck is still referred to by many dealers and operators by the model number, harking back to the days when Mercedes did not use brand names for their models. People will talk of a Mercedes 815 when what they actually mean is a Mercedes Atego 815, despite the Atego being launched back in 1998.
The later Ategos come in four cab variants - a standard ‘S' cab which is a day cab, an ‘extended wall' day cab which has a little more room, (although you'd struggle to notice the difference,) the Atego L single sleeper cab and the high roof double sleeper L-sleeper cab. The engine range starts at the 4-cylinder 4.2 litre engine, rated at 150hp or 177hp. Power for the 218hp powered Mercedes Atego comes from a 4.8-litre Mercedes 4-cylinder whilst the top-powered models get their 231 and 279hp from the Mercedes OM906LA 6.4 litre 6-cylinder. Depending on the application, there is a choice of three 6-speed manual gearboxes to choose from and a recently introduced automated gearbox.
