Mercedes-Benz introduced UK customers to its first long-haul battery-electric truck, the eActros 600 tractor unit, at this year’s Road Transport Expo (RTX). Designed for long-haul distribution, the zero-emissions eActros 600 truck has advanced batteries for up to 500 kilometres (311 miles) per charge. Mercedes says the vehicle should enter series production in 2024.

“Long-distance distribution is the lifeblood of our nation’s economy, and the move towards electric transport is gathering pace all the time, which is why we believe the eActros 600 is arriving at the perfect moment for our industry,” says Mercedes’ Head of Future Sustainability, James Venables. At RTX, representatives from the company explained the benefits of the new Mercedes tractor and the support the manufacturer plans to make available to its electric vehicle customers.

Topping Up The eActros 600 To Go Farther

The eActros 600 Mercedes displayed at the show was a fully operational prototype with right-hand drive. Its three battery packs have a combined capacity of more than 600 kilowatt-hours. The batteries use lithium iron phosphate cell technology, avoiding the use of nickel and cobalt.

When using the fast-charging Megawatt Charging System, the eActros 600 can recharge from 20% to 80% in just 30 minutes. Should the driver top up the batteries during statutorily mandated breaks, Mercedes says, the truck could potentially travel up to 1,000 km (622 mi) per day.

Mercedes-Benz expects the eActros 600 to match the working life of its other trucks at 1.2 million km (745,650 mi) over 10 years. At that point, the company says, the batteries’ “state of health” should remain above 80%.

The eActros 600’s “Extremely Efficient” Driveline

The eAxle drive axle for the eActros 600 contains two electric motors and a 4-speed transmission. Mercedes customised its Predictive Powertrain Control cruise and transmission systems for the truck’s battery-powered driveline. The Active Drive Assist 3 and Active Brake Assist 6 safety systems are standard on the electric 4x2 vehicle, which features the aerodynamic new ProCabin.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ eConsultancy team is available to give buyers comprehensive support and advice regarding electric truck selection, recharging infrastructure buildout, public subsidies, driver training specific to each model, and more.
