The Volvo FM has been around since 1998 and, as you might expect, has undergone a number of upgrades since. It was designed for regional haulage and has excelled in this niche over the years. Its reputation for great build quality and reliability are central to this success and these qualities have been enhanced with every version that has arrived. 2010 saw a major overhaul, with an exterior facelift and new internal features. Since then the FM has been offered in no fewer than six cab configurations, namely the Day Cab, Low Sleeper Cab, Standard Sleeper Cab, Globetrotter, Globetrotter LXL and Crew Cab. The Volvo FM comes in both rigid and tractor setup and has a huge range of axle configurations.
The post-2010 versions have the standard Volvo diagonal strip on the grille and a second chrome bar to the top. The lower section is split into two horizontal sections, with a subtle ‘V’ shape. The lights look very like those of the FH, but the main feature only appears when you move to the side and see the profile created by the raked windscreen, a unique Volvo feature in this class. It is an attractive design and one which lends the Volvo FM a pleasingly dynamic appearance.
Inside, Volvo’s build quality is again evident, putting it on an equal standing with Mercedes and Scania. The now familiar wraparound dash is refreshingly free of clutter and switchgear layout is well thought out. The instrument cluster features the usual circular dials and a useful information display. There are two handy 12v and 24v sockets in the fascia, along with USB and AUX connectors for the sound system. The seats are excellent and the optional ventilation, body weight adjustment, heating and back rests make them a complete standout. Even basic versions are comfortable and adjustable and the steering wheel also adjusts and folds away for easier access to the cab.
The upgraded D11C, D13B and D13C engines are capable and are so far proving reliable too. These units meet Euro 5 standards and output ranges between 330 and 500hp. The power plants can be joined to a choice of 9-speed or 14-speed manual gearbox and the excellent I-Shift 12 speed automatic transmission. This latter unit is one of the best in the industry, seldom requiring any manual intervention and freeing up the driver to concentrate on the road ahead. The unit also saves fuel and is 70kg lighter.
The Volvo FM is a standout in this sector. The suspension and chassis can cope with anything you throw at them and can carry full payloads without complaint. The engine range is comprehensive and the cabs are first-class. Taken together, they make a second-hand Volvo FM an excellent choice.
