Hegelmann Group Doubles Down On Clean-Burning Natural Gas & Biomethane With Iveco S-Way LNG & CNG Tractors

Besides its reduced carbon emissions, Iveco says the S-Way Natural Gas can run up to 50% more quietly than comparable diesel trucks. (Photo courtesy of Iveco.)

Transport firm the Hegelmann Group is acquiring 150 more liquid natural gas-powered Iveco S-Way LNG tractor units, as well as 10 S-Way CNG prime movers powered by compressed natural gas. Hegelmann has been running 20 LNG-powered Iveco trucks for the past few years, realizing “significant” reductions in carbon dioxide emissions.

“The Hegelmann Group has experienced directly in their operations how the Iveco S-Way LNG trucks provide a viable solution for sustainable transport—so much so that, after their initial 20 units, they have now significantly extended their natural gas-powered fleet with this new order,” says Iveco Head of Key Accounts John Venstra. “We are proud to support their efforts towards decarbonising transport—a commitment that we at Iveco share and has led us to pioneer natural gas technology for over 25 years.”

    Looking Beyond The Bottom Line

When running its gas-powered trucks on biomethane, the Hegelmann Group can realize a CO2 emissions reduction of up to 95% compared with a diesel model, as well as minimal nitrogen dioxide and soot generation. Biomethane generated from animal waste can even attain a negative carbon footprint, Iveco says.

“In the current situation of exploding LNG prices, the decision (to buy more gas-powered vehicles) was not easy,” says Andreas Schmidt, CSO of the Hegelmann Group and CEO of Hegelmann Germany. “But we have consciously decided to offer sustainable transports in the long term.”

Another practical benefit of a natural gas engine is quieter operation. Iveco says the S-Way Natural Gas is up to 50% quieter than comparable diesel trucks when running in Silent Mode. The LNG and CNG models are ideal for nighttime deliveries and "eco zones," such as the Inn Valley Motorway (A12) after dark.

The Iveco S-Way LNG & CNG

Hegelmann’s gas-powered S-Way tractors use a 12.9-litre Cursor 13 engine with 460 horsepower (338 kilowatts) that complies with Euro 6 Step E emission standards. Iveco also offers the S-Way with 8.7-litre Cursor 9 engines in a range of horsepower levels.

The LNG tractor version has a fuel range of up to 1,600 kilometres (approximately 1,000 miles), while the CNG edition can travel up to 670 km (nearly 420 mi) without refuelling. The S-Way also comes in rigid configurations with two or three axles.

Hegelmann’s 4x2 long-haul transport trucks came with an Active Space cab with a high roof. The company specified options including automatic air conditioning, an auxiliary heating system, a heated seat with lumbar support, a side window visor, and an insulated cab roof. The cabin features a refrigerator/freezer unit, an insulated storage box, and large luggage compartments, as well as a wide, one-piece bed.

Other options in Hegelmann’s new prime movers include LED headlamps, a tyre pressure monitoring system, an axle load display, DAB+ radio, two extra USB ports, and a 230V power outlet.
