The 19-tonne (21-U.S.-ton) variant of the DAF XB Electric truck is making its UK trade show debut at Road Transport Expo (RTX) this week in Stoneleigh, Warwickshire. The truck, also available in 12- and 16-t (13.2- and 17.6-U.S.-t) gross vehicle weights (GVWs), is a member of the DAF New Generation XB series, which replaces the manufacturer’s popular LF range.

    About RTX

RTX runs from 4 to 6 June and claims to be a must-attend event for those in the heavy goods vehicle segment. The show gives attendees access to more than 200 market-leading suppliers and an up-close look at the latest vehicle, product, and service innovations via static displays, demonstrations, ride-and-drives, seminars, and other activities.

    All Charged Up

The 19-t XB Electric truck at RTX is a rigid truck that’s an excellent option for running inner-city and regional distribution routes. Depending on the spec and application, the truck has a range of up to 350 kilometres (217 miles). The e-motor that powers the truck delivers 190 kilowatts (255 horsepower) of nominal power, with a nominal torque of 1,850 newton-metres (1,364 pounds-foot).

DAF uses cobalt- and magnesium-free lithium iron (ferrous) phosphate high energy (LFP) batteries to further reduce the zero-emissions truck's environmental impact. The 19-t XB Electric delivers 210 kilowatt-hours. An option for 282-kWh batteries is also available. The truck’s Combined Charging System lets operators charge the XB Electric’s batteries using the regular electricity network. Recharging from 20 to 80% takes only 40 to 70 minutes using 650-volt DC rapid charging.

    More New Generation XB Options

The New Generation DAF XB range also includes diesel-powered models well-suited for everything from refuse collection to urban distribution tasks. Customers can equip the truck with 4.5-litre, 4-cylinder Paccar PX-5 or 6.7-litre, 6-cylinder Paccar PX-7 power plants. Power ratings range from 170 to 310 HP (124 to 227 kW).

Buyers can choose from an 8-speed Powerline automatic gearbox or 6- or 9-speed manual transmissions or order a fully automatic Allison gearbox for special applications.

The XB Electric and the diesel-powered models sport exterior updates such as a new grille and slimline mirrors for better direct visibility. Both also include several advanced driver assistance systems, including an Advanced Emergency Braking System, Drive-off Assist, and DAF Turn Assist. The latter applies audible and visual warnings to alert the driver of motorcycles or cars in the blind zone during lane changes or when merging.
