Supermarket chain Tesco recently acquired its first Volvo FM Electric 4x2 tractor unit to aid in achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2035. The emissions-free truck will join Tesco’s distribution fleet to make deliveries across Greater London, Suffolk, Essex, and Kent. The FM Electric will be paired with a variety of trailer types and lengths as it hauls grocery items seven days a week and is expected to log around 113,000 kilometres (70,000 miles) annually.

    Smart Power

Tesco’s FM Electric is fitted with Volvo’s Globetrotter cab, which has a Direct Vision Standard three-star rating. Three electric motors power the truck, generating up to 490 kilowatts (650 horsepower) and 2,400 newton-metres (1,770 pounds-foot) of continuous torque. The 40-tonne (44-U.S.-ton) truck is equipped with Volvo’s I-Shift gearbox, which constantly evaluates speed, weight, road grade, and torque demand for a smooth ride. An onboard electromobility traction control system that adapts to surface conditions manages the truck’s power. Drivers can use drive mode options to set performance, comfort, and energy usage levels.

The FM Electric’s battery pack has the maximum of six batteries providing up to 540 kilowatt-hours for a range of around 300 km (186 mi). The batteries charge in 2.5 hours with a 250-kW DC charger or in 9.5 hours on a 43-kW AC charger and will primarily charge on-site in Thurrock. Low noise levels and zero emissions enable the FM Electric to operate in areas with noise or emissions limits where diesel trucks would be unable to go.

“The arrival of this fully electric 40-t Volvo tractor unit is a first for Tesco and another exciting milestone for our delivery fleet, which directly supports our ambitious sustainability targets,” says Tesco Fleet Engineering Manager Cliff Smith. (Photo courtesy of Volvo.)

    Clean, Green & Quiet

“The arrival of this fully electric 40-t Volvo tractor unit is a first for Tesco and another exciting milestone for our delivery fleet, which directly supports our ambitious sustainability targets,” says Tesco Fleet Engineering Manager Cliff Smith. “It’s without doubt the cleanest, greenest, and quietest tractor unit we have on the fleet, and it comes backed by a whole suite of connected services to make the transition to electric vehicles easier, including live positioning with real-time energy status.”
