Inkerman Hire Services, a specialist in construction, demolition, and general hauling operations based in Woking in Surrey, England, recently purchased a new FH16-750 8x4 rigid hooklift truck that will be used to pull a drawbar trailer packed with plant machinery. The truck sports a 750-horsepower engine and a 12-speed I-Shift automated transmission. Other highlights include rear air suspension, Volvo’s Dynamic Steering, Dura-Bright polished aluminium rims, and fuel anti-theft and anti-spillage devices.
“We move quite a few machines about and we just felt there wasn't enough power in other vehicles to pull a machine on the back of the lorry, as well as the trailer itself,” says Charlie Garnade, managing director of Inkerman Hire Services. “I used to have a Volvo FL10 tipper and an FM9 grab lorry. They were good vehicles for the price and we knew this Volvo was the right machine for the job.”
Tandem Axle Lift
A major selling point of the Volvo FH16-750 for Inkerman is the Tandem Axle Lift feature. This allows the truck operator to press a button to lift the drive axle when the truck is empty, and then the axle is dropped automatically when the truck is loaded for maximum traction. Volvo claims that this entire process only takes 15 seconds. "We needed an 8x4 rigid configuration because we need to go off-road sometimes,” says Garnade. “When we found out Volvo did a Tandem Axle Lift it was an opportunity to have an 8x4, but only when we needed it. We don't know anyone else that offers that choice.”
