Peak Waste Recycling Adds Volvo FE & FL Skip Loaders To Volvo-Dominant Fleet

As Derbyshire’s largest privately owned waste management company, Peak Waste Recycling maintains a large fleet of skip loader, hook loader, and refuse collection vehicles to carry out operations in Ashbourne, Castleton, Derby, Kilburn, Melbourne, and elsewhere. Of its 34 trucks, 28 are Volvos, including two new Volvo FL rigids and a new Volvo FE rigid that Peak Waste Recycling recently purchased due to the robustness and reliability the firm’s other Volvo trucks have shown over the years.

    “Tried & Tested”

Founded more than 30 years ago, Peak Waste Recycling is a family-operated outfit that provides cardboard, plastics, and paper recycling services as well as waste disposal and confidential waste shredding. Ken Martin, co-owner with brother Richard, says they selected the new Volvos in part because they’re fans of Volvo products.

“They are tried and tested trucks, incredibly reliable, and we know they can do the job we require,” says Martin, “which is why we keep renewing with them.” The trucks will be used to collect and deliver skips from building sites, factories, and homes around the Derbyshire Dales. “The initial plan was to get these as fleet replacements, but we’re so busy at the moment, we kept the three old ones running for now,” Martin says.

    An Easy Decision

The company’s new Volvos include two 16-tonne (17.6-U.S.-ton) Volvo FLs, each with Cayvol MCBT skip loader equipment and one 18-t (19.8-U.S.-t) FE with Hyva NG2012XL skip loader bodywork. The FLs have a manual gearbox, and the FE uses Volvo’s automated I-Shift transmission. All three are equipped with Volvo’s D8K engine; the FLs pack the D8K250 variant, rated for 250 horsepower (186 kilowatts) and 950 newton-metres (700.7 pounds-foot) of torque, and the FE has a 280-HP (206-kW) D8K280 under the hood that generates 1,050 N-m (774.4 lbf-ft.) of torque. Supplied by Hartshorne Motor Services, the trucks’ cabs are spec’d with DAB radio, air conditioning, and heated seats.

“As well as the skip loaders, we also have 8x4 hook loaders and 8x4 refuse collection vehicles,” Martin says. “The drivers like them, and parts availability is extremely good for our in-house servicing and maintenance team. We were never going to look anywhere else really.”
