DAF 2011 Changes to PACCAR MX engine

DAF Trucks introduced a significant number of changes to the 12.9 litre PACCAR MX engine back in 2011. New pistons, optimised fuel injection and a unique, fully encapsulated exhaust manifold unit gave the engine substantially lower fuel consumption and therefore lower CO2-emissions.
This new 12.9 litre was fitted to the CF85 and XF105 and has improvements focused around the engine working under partial load - more common than flat out, full load, uphill driving. Rated at a choice of 360 hp, 410 hp and 460 hp the imporovements in piston design will help cooling in advnace of the changes needed for Euro 6.
It also means that DAF can reduce the size of the oil pump and have made improvements to the ECU and injection. A lot of thought has gone into managing air around the turbo and exhaust manifold to improve efficiency.DAF claim improvements of up to 3% in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
To prevent excessive fuel loss, the new DAF engines will turn themselves off after 5 minutes of idling - saving fuel but may make the drivers freeze! A lightweight 12-speed joins the existing 16-speed gearbox. Speed limiters can be increased from 85kmh to 89kmh if the customer requests it, but expect to lose about 2 to 3% in fuel efficiency as a result.
DAF's (ZF) AS Tronic automated manual box has had some work carried out to make it more economical and to match the new characteristics of the revised engine. The driver can only change gears if the truck is crawling along - when in normal operation the computer is in control, also showing the driver the current MPG and the MPG todate.
