Buxton-Based Distribution Company Opts For Volvo FEs, Likes Wheelbases & Comfort Cabs

SK Distribution, a pallet delivery company and Palletways network member based in Buxton, Derbyshire, recently added four new Volvo FE-240 rigid trucks to its fleet. The trucks, supplied by Thomas Hardie Commercials Ltd, feature Euro-6 D8K engines that produce 240 horsepower, 12-speed I-Shift automated transmissions, 13-tonne single-reduction drive axles, and 255-litre fuel tanks.

The company originally wanted FL models, but switched to FEs largely due to their wheelbase size. “We were upgraded to the FE models due to our required wheelbase size of 6,450mm,” says Vic Smith, managing director at SK Distribution. “We’ve had Fred Smith & Sons (Motorbodies) Ltd curtainside bodywork fitted to the group, each of which can accommodate 14 pallets and a pump lift truck. The extra half-metre length over our old specification makes a big difference.”

    Comfort Cabs

Another major selling point for the Volvo FE, and the originally ordered FL models, is the Comfort cab, which offers additional space for use as an office environment or as a sleeping compartment for one. SK Distribution’s FE models are all outfitted with the office space, including a locker located on the engine cover. Other features on the new trucks include glazing panels on the passenger doors and cantilever tail lifts that run the entire width of the body.

    Performance & Ongoing Support

SK Distribution is pleased so far with the performance of the trucks, which went into operation in November 2018. “Our drivers like them and the specification and performance of the new Volvo FEs is leaps and bounds over the other makes they replaced,” Smith explains. The trucks are also covered by six-year Volvo Service Contracts, which he says will help to “maximise vehicle uptime.”
