Volvo Trucks Outfits Cheshire-Based D Morgan With 31 FMX Tippers & An FH16 Tractor

Volvo Trucks and D Morgan plc, an engineering solutions provider based in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, that also provides plant and transport services, announced in early September that D Morgan is adding 32 new Volvo trucks to its fleet through staggered deliveries. Facilitated by UK Volvo Trucks distributor Thomas Hardie Commercials, the acquisition includes 31 Volvo FMX 8x4 rigid tippers and one FH16 650 double-drive tractor that D Morgan will use to transport plant equipment. Dale Anderton, D Morgan transport manager, says some of the trucks are in service and have “been very well received by our drivers.”

    A Boweld Body

D Morgan ran extensive trials and obtained “great” feedback from numerous drivers before selecting Volvo trucks. Anderton says the trucks’ fuel economy, anticipated residual values, and other traits made them an attractive choice. Besides providing a Volvo D11K Euro 6 engine producing 410 horsepower, the FMX models feature I-Shift gearboxes with Volvo’s construction package software included. The tippers’ powertrains also feature single-reduction, tandem 23-tonne drive axles with differential and cross locks. The tippers’ chassis are positioned extra-high and equipped with horizontal-mounted particulate filters and vertical SCR (selective catalytic reduction) exhaust silencers to reduce dust levels onsite.

The tipper trucks also boast a new Boweld-manufactured tipper body design customised to meet D Morgan’s specific requirements. Among other things, Boweld’s design maximises payload figures and integrates automatic locking devices into the tailgate doors, Volvo says. “Our new Boweld bodies have an extremely clean profile and no horizontal surfaces, which prevents the gathering of excess spoil,” says Dave Dulohery, D Morgan fleet engineering director. The body’s side panels, meanwhile, feature ribbed 3-millimetre Hardox steel construction for extra strength.

    Volvo’s “Most Robust Truck Ever”

Available in day, sleeper, globetrotter, and crew cab options, the FMX is billed as Volvo’s “most robust truck ever.” Able to tow up to 32 tonnes and durable enough to “bump into a concrete wall and carry on,” the FMX features high-situated headlights, a Weighmaster onboard weighing system, a five-point and left-turn camera system, Sidescan cycle safety systems, and reversing alarms.

You’ll find hundreds of quality used Volvo trucks for sale every day on this site, including FMX and FH16 models.
