Dedicated To Distribution: A Closer Look At DAF’s LF Series

Initially released in 2001, it didn’t take long for DAF Truck’s LF series to gain notoriety, earning the title of International Truck of the Year in 2002. The LF series has continued to impress and has taken home many transport and fleet awards, including a three-peat for Truck of the Year from 2017 to 2019 at the Commercial Fleet Awards. Over the years, DAF has continued to improve the trucks’ versatility with new powertrains and more driveline options.

    Highly Configurable Drivetrain

On the LF series, engine options include PACCAR’s Euro 6 PX-4, PX-5, and PX-7 which range from 156 to 325 horsepower (116.3 to 242.4 kilowatts) and from 500 to 1,200 newton-metres (368.8 to 885 pounds-foot) of torque. Even when operators select an engine from the upper echelon of power ratings, improved engine optimisation software can result in fuel savings up to 6%. For those who prioritise fuel economy, an LF City configuration with a 3.8-litre PACCAR engine is available.

The wide selection of engines is matched by multiple transmission options for the LF, including five-speed, six-speed, nine-speed, and 12-speed manual, automated, and fully automatic gearboxes. The range of high-efficiency gearboxes helps to improve manoeuvrability and driver-friendliness.

    An Option For Any Fleet

Because the LF series caters to a variety of customers, DAF provides plenty of configuration and wheelbase options. The front axles can support anywhere from 3.6 to 7.5 tonnes to prevent overloading, and DAF develops the rear axles for almost any application. From the lightest, 5-tonne SR 5.10 axle to the 13-tonne SR1344 rear axle for extra capacity on the 19-tonne LF, a wide variety of bodies and superstructures can be fitted to the LF series. DAF’s faster rear axle ratios, up to 3.31:1, also allow drivers to reduce engine speeds by 150 to 200 rpm at cruising speed.

For wheelbases, operators can select from up to 6.9 metres (22.6 feet) and body lengths of more than 9 metres (29.5 feet). For longer range service, fuel tank volumes can be up to 1,240 litres (327 gallons). The versatility of the LF series chassis also makes it possible for third-party firms to easily adapt the basic platform to suit your needs.
