Volta Trucks has officially chosen Meritor as its primary axle supplier, making the Volta Zero the first commercial vehicle in Europe to utilise Meritor’s eAxle. This agreement will allow Volta to begin producing trial vehicles this year and then move into full production roughly 12 months later.

What makes Meritor’s eAxle particularly unique is that it features an electronic motor, transmission, and rear axle all in one unit as part of the Blue Horizon 14Xe integrated ePowertrain. It’s designed for both medium- and heavy-duty trucks, and thanks to its lightweight design, it can help increase efficiency and extend the range of the vehicle. Volta adds that it frees “up space between the chassis rails to provide the safest possible location for the vehicle’s battery.”

    Volta Zero Under The Bonnet

The base Volta Zero is a 16-tonne (17.6-U.S.-ton) all-electric vehicle with a range of between 150 and 200 kilometres (93 and 124 miles), depending on whether buyers choose the 160- or 200-kilowatt-hour battery pack. Designed primarily for local or regional distribution, the Volta Zero has a 37.7-cubic-metre (1,331-cubic-foot) cargo box along with a maximum payload capacity of 8,600 kilograms (18,960 pounds). It also has a top speed of 90 km/h (55 mph) and support for one to three seats, with a central driver position.

With this important piece in place, Volta Trucks is on schedule to begin producing Volta Zero trucks for customer trials in 2021 before entering full production roughly one year later. (Photo courtesy of Volta Trucks.)

    “Another Major Milestone”

“Confirmation of the strategic supplier for the electric drivetrain is another major milestone on our journey towards the production of the Volta Zero,” says Volta Trucks CEO Rob Fowler. “As a pioneer and innovator in this unserved area of the electric vehicle marketplace, it is imperative for us to select experienced, world-class suppliers who share our ambition and values. The first use of Meritor’s revolutionary eAxle in a European commercial vehicle is an excellent example of our cutting-edge product development and supplier selection strategy in action.”
