The last year operating during a pandemic was a chaotic one for Broughton Transport Solutions Ltd, a provider of ambient, frozen, and refrigerated hauling services that also belongs to two pallet networks and offers and warehousing and storage services. That’s why the Broughton Gifford-based business wasted no time entering into service the new 26-tonne (28.7-U.S.-ton) Renault Trucks D Wide rigid it recently received from Sparks Commercials.

“The past 12 months have been nothing short of hectic,” says Broughton MD Toby Ovens. “Within minutes of the salesman delivering the truck, we were unbuckling the curtains to load it up and send it out.”

    Have Pallets, Will Travel

According to Renault Trucks, Broughton Transport Solutions purchased its D Wide after Roger Millett, transport solutions executive with Sparks Commercial Services of Swindon, made a cold sales call and Broughton Transport received positive feedback concerning the dealer’s aftermarket services. The D Wide is the first Renault Trucks unit in Broughton Transport’s fleet of 42 trucks and 40 trailers. The company plans to use it to meet increasing demand for its pallet network services, to the tune of about 400 pallets nightly.

Broughton Transport configured its D Wide with a rear-steering chassis based on requests from its operators, as many reported that the rural areas where they routinely deliver and collect have tight access ways. The truck is powered by a Euro 6-compliant Renault DTI 8 engine rated for 320 horsepower (240 kilowatts) that delivers 1,200 newton-metres (885 pounds-foot) of torque to a 12-speed automated transmission. The truck also features curtainsider bodywork from Fred Smith & Sons of West Bromwich and a 1,500-kilogram (3,307-pound) Dhollandia fold-away tail lift.

    Designed To Distribute

The D Wide is part of Renault Trucks’ Distribution category of rigids and tractor units also available in D-, D Wide Z.E.-, and D Z.E.-series models. The trucks can serve such applications as household and industrial waste collection, cleaning and sanitary services, firefighting and emergency services, parcel services, vehicle transport, and controlled temperature transport.

D Wide trucks are available in diesel-powered versions as well as battery electric variants and still others powered by biofuel, compressed natural gas (CNG), and XTL synthetic fuel. They’re available in day, global, night and day, and sleeper cab options. D Wide models are available with gross combination weights (GCWs) ranging from 18 to 26 t (19.8 to 28.7 U.S. t) and gross vehicle weights (GVWs) from 21.5 to 50 t (23.7 to 55.1 U.S. t).
