Essex-based multi-utility connections provider Express Utilities recently purchased four Mercedes-Benz Arocs tipper-grabs to support its work. Express Utilities previously focused solely on laying and maintaining gas pipework, but now also installs, connects, owns, and operates electricity, water, and gigabit fibre networks for new-build housing developments across England, Scotland, and Wales. The new trucks, two eight-wheelers and two six-wheelers, were purchased from Motus Truck & Van to replace four grab loaders from the same muscular model range the company used since 2018; the new trucks are covered by a five-year Mercedes-Benz Complete Service Contract.

    About The Arocs

All four Arocs were fitted with steel Predator Ultimate tipping bodies and remote radio-controlled PALFINGER Epsilon M135L cranes that work with KINSHOFER clamshell buckets. The 8x4s are Arocs 3240s with ClassicSpace M-cabs. The 6x4s are Arocs 2633s with ClassicSpace S-cabs. Each truck has uprated front axles and 10.7-litre in-line six-cylinder engines, delivering 290 and 240 kilowatts (394 and 326 horsepower), respectively. The Arocs are also fitted with Brigade safety cameras. The grab loaders are used to collect and deliver stone and aggregates from quarries and remove spoil from sites. Two will operate from a depot in Roydon, Essex, and the other in Peterborough and Rochester, Kent.

    Exacting Specifications

“The truck is fundamentally well-suited to our requirements, not least because its excellent ground clearance is a big advantage when working in quarries and on rough sites,” says Tony Lake, project manager for backfill reinstatement for Express Utilities. “However, another manufacturer was also very competitive. Ultimately, it was Motus Truck & Van’s customer-focused service that swayed us towards Mercedes-Benz again. Truck Sales Manager Sam Setterfield has been out on the road with one of our vehicles, so he understands our operation and what we need. These trucks are highly bespoke and with Sam’s expert assistance we were able to refine the specifications and tailor them perfectly to meet our requirements.”
