Arnold Plant Hire recently replaced an older six-wheeler in its fleet with a new Volvo FH 420 Globetrotter 8x2 rigid. The new truck features an electro-hydraulic steered rear axle for maximum manoeuvrability in areas with limited access. The FH 420 Globetrotter is the third Volvo for the Stockport-based company, joining two Volvo tractor units to complete a now all-Volvo fleet.

The FH Globetrotter is mounted with a Sterling GP plant body with beavertail and a winch for loading and unloading plant. It has a full working-at-height system along both sides and air horns and beacons mounted to the cab roof. Arnold Plant Hire says the truck will support their growing fleet of over 200 items of plant and machinery which are hired for jobs in the construction, recycling, and waste sectors along with general industry. The new FH 420 will carry plant up to 14-tonne (15.4-U.S.-ton) excavators and cover approximately 40,000 miles per year.

    A Comfortable Cab

Arnold Plant Hire says one of the selling points of the FH was its spacious cab with its single bunk, satellite navigation, fridge-freezer, leather trim, TV preparation, and a factory-fitted microwave.

“The new Volvo FH ticks all the boxes; our drivers work incredibly hard, so looking after them and giving them great trucks is really important for us as a business,” says Arnold Plant Hire Plant Manager Jason Caudwell. “They typically have a few nights away each month, but it’s also about the time spent on-site waiting to deliver plant, as well as taking rest breaks. By choosing the FH Globetrotter cab, we can be confident we are giving them a great environment to work and relax in, no matter where they have to deliver to.”

    About The FH 420

The FH has a D13 step D engine with 420 horsepower (313 kilowatts), Volvo Dynamic steering, and a tandem axle lift, which allows drivers to raise the extra rear axle when it is not needed to save fuel. The I-Shift automated gearbox ensures every gear change is timed precisely for safer driving. Volvo’s I-See feature optimises speed and gear changes to match the topography of the route.
