Amazon’s sustainability goals, outlined in The Climate Pledge the company launched in 2019, include a couple major target dates. By 2030, the e-commerce giant wants at least half of its shipments to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, and by 2040, Amazon hopes to reach net-zero carbon emissions across all operations. Amazon UK recently began the journey to net-zero emissions for its middle-mile fleet with the addition of five DAF CF Electric tractors. By replacing diesel trucks with CF Electric models, Amazon UK will prevent about 170 tonnes (187 U.S. tons) of CO2 emissions while covering around 100,000 miles (160,934 kilometres) annually fueled by renewable electricity.

    CF Electric Options

DAF offers the CF Electric in a 4x2 configuration with a gross combination weight (GCW) of 37 t (41 U.S. t). A 29-t (32-U.S.-t) 6x2 rigid configuration is also available with a steered trailing axle that DAF says maximises manoeuvrability. Both the 4x2 tractor and 6x2 rigid are equipped with a 210 kW (240 kW peak power) electric motor. The CF Electric features a 350-kilowatt-hour (315 kWh effective) battery pack that can be fully recharged in 75 minutes, when connected to a 250-kW charging station.

    Just The Start

“Amazon is one of the first companies in the world to put electric heavy goods trucks on the road,” says Amazon UK Country Manager John Boumphrey. “We’re committed to becoming net-zero carbon by 2040, and this is a milestone as we continue to decarbonize our transportation network so we can deliver more customer orders using zero-emissions vehicles.”

“The DAF CF Electric truck represents an important step in the industry towards zero-emission middle-mile distribution,” says DAF Trucks Director of Fleet Sales, Eelco van Veen. “It has been developed in response to rising demand for better air quality and lower CO2 emissions in the transportation sector. Thanks to smart planning and fast charging, the CF Electric can clock up to 500 kilometres per day. That is a figure operators really can work with.”
