'Bombproof' Build Quality Leads Modplan To Purchase Seven More Mercedes-Benz Atego Trucks

In 2012, Newport-based Modplan bought its first group of 7.5-tonne (8.3-U.S.-ton) Mercedes-Benz Atego trucks to deliver and install its uPVC (unplasticised polyvinyl chloride) conservatories, doors, and windows.

“They were so much better in every respect than the vehicles we were using previously that we’ve stuck with them ever since,” says Modplan Logistics Manager Gareth Gough. “The Atego has proved to be pretty well bombproof, so much so that we still have three of those original trucks. Each has now covered in excess of half a million miles but they’re still out there doing the job, day in, day out, which is a great testament to the brand.”

Modplan recently returned to Atego, and dealer Euro Commercials, when updating the fleet, which now includes seven more of the Mercedes-Benz trucks designed for light- and medium-duty distribution.

    From Manual To PowerShift 3

The new Atego trucks are specified with six-speed PowerShift 3 automated manual transmissions, in part because of PowerShift 3’s EcoRoll mode to reduce fuel consumption.

“With the price of fuel continuing to rise to eye-watering levels, it made sound business sense to invest in newer equipment, which is more economical to run and better for the environment,” says Gough.

Modplan’s new trucks are all 816 variants featuring fuel-efficient, 156-horsepower (115-kilowatt) engines that comply with Euro 6 emissions regulations. Mercedes-Benz also optimised the Atego’s wind resistance, from the corner paneling to the roof, to minimise aerodynamic drag and maximise fuel efficiency.

    Designed For Distribution

The Atego range includes models with gross vehicle weights (GVWs) ranging from 7.5 to 16 t (17.6 U.S. t) with four cab options from which to choose. The Atego also offers wide compatibility with light- and medium-duty bodywork designed for all manner of construction and distribution jobs; Modplan added box bodies by Cardiff Truck & Bus.

“The Atego is ideally suited to our operation,” says Modplan Transport Manager Alan Oldham. “It’s not the lightest or indeed the cheapest 7.5-tonner, but what you do get is indestructible build quality and reliability, plus an exceptionally high level of comfort. All of which mean it’s great value for money.”
