UK Brewer Piloting Two All-Electric Renault E-Tech D Wide Trucks

Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) of Wolverhampton is conducting a proof-of-concept trial in collaboration with Renault Trucks and will have two battery-electric heavy-duty E-Tech D Wide trucks in operation by month’s end. If the 26-tonne (28.7-U.S.-ton) D26 Wide and 18-t (19.8-U.S.-t) D18 Wide pass the test, CMBC says it will consider adding more electric trucks to its 270-vehicle fleet.

“We are delighted to partner with Renault Trucks in beginning our journey to introduce fully electric vehicles into our fleet,” says Sarah Perry, CMBC vice president of customer supply chain. “The pilot is the latest step towards achieving our ambition of zero carbon footprint across our value chain, as part of our Together Towards ZERO sustainability programme.”

    “Potentially Transformational”

Renault Trucks dealership Allports Group supplied the E-Tech trucks, which CMBC will operate from distribution depots in Cardiff and Thurrock in Essex County. Each depot has a charging point in place that CMBC will power with electricity generated from renewable resources. The trucks can deliver 10,000 freshly brewed pints to pubs per day and will allow CMBC to replace up to 30,577 diesel-fuelled kilometres (19,000 miles) per vehicle per annum. The trucks’ near-silent operation also means they can be used during unconventional hours in urban areas. Renault says the trucks are ideal for urban distribution, including along routes leading into London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone.

“With the trucks capable of travelling up to 150 kilometres on a single charge, the urbanised areas of Cardiff and Essex are the ideal routes to test the potential of electric vehicles in our logistics network,” says Perry. “This launch is potentially transformational to us as a brewer and logistics operator, but also in terms of helping pubs to build back greener after the pandemic.”

    The E-Tech D Wide

Renault’s all-electric truck range for urban applications also includes the E-Tech Master van and E-Tech D heavy-duty truck. Renault’s full range of 100%-electric vehicles have gross vehicle weights (GVWs) ranging 3.1 t (3.4 U.S. t) to 26 t. The company also recently announced new E-Tech T and E-Tech C models that reach up to a 44-t (48.5-U.S.-t) GVW and are designed for regional transport and construction applications, respectively. The E-Tech D Wide has two electric motors rated for a combined maximum of 370 kilowatts (500 horsepower) and 850 newton-metres (627 pounds-foot) of torque.
