7.5-Tonne Canters Offer More Payload & Better Fuel Efficiency For Fife Creamery

“We work these vehicles hard,” says Fife Creamery Logistics Manager Richard Wishart. “Each will typically clock-up 70,000 miles a year, so the fact that the Canter is backed by Mercedes-Benz, and we can get a full five years’ warranty cover, is another important plus.” (Photo courtesy of Mercedes-Benz.)

With nearly all of its 30 new Fuso Canter 7.5-tonne (8.2-U.S.-ton) delivery trucks now in service, food wholesaler Fife Creamery is realising the benefits of the trucks’ greater payload allowance and lower fuel costs. The 7C18 trucks are equipped with a 175-horsepower (129-kilowatt) engine and the Duonic automated manual transmission with Eco Mode, Parking, and Creep functions; both have contributed to Fife Creamery’s improved efficiency in its multi-drop chilled and frozen product deliveries.

“The Canter is not a long-haul truck but it’s excellent for the kind of intensive delivery work that we undertake in busy urban centres such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Aberdeen,” says Fife Creamery Logistics Manager Richard Wishart.

    Moving High Volumes

The new Canter’s ladder frame has a common bolt hole pattern that allows bodybuilders to fit a broad selection of truck bodies to the Canter. Supplier Gray & Adams equips Fife Creamery’s trucks with dual-compartment insulated bodywork and Thermo King V-800 Series refrigeration units. The refrigeration units have compressors that are powered by the Canters’ engine, as well as a stand-by compressor powered by an electric motor. The new Canter is also available with Scattolini tipper and dropside bodies as factory option from Fuso.

    New Canter Features

The new Canter is available in 3.5-, 6.5-, 7.5-, and 8.55-t (3.85-, 7.2-, 8.3-, and 9.4-U.S.-t) weight classes with single, crew, and double cabs. This latest edition of the Canter boasts the small turning radius for which the model is known, and many configurations are available in multiple wheelbase lengths spanning 2,500 to 4,750 millimetres (98.4 to 187 inches). The range offers payload capacities from 1.5 to 6 t (1.65 to 6.6 U.S. t); the 7.5-t version employed by Fife Creamery has a 5-t (5.5-U.S.-t) payload capacity.

“Despite the fridge body, and with a driver and full tanks of fuel and AdBlue also factored in, ours will still take a 3-tonne payload—that’s almost a tonne more than you’d get on a conventional 7.5-tonner,” says Wishart. “At 18 miles per gallon, the Canter is also comfortably ahead in terms of fuel economy, and this contributes to its overall cost-effectiveness.”
