English Oak Tree Services of Caterham, Surrey, recently purchased its second 3.5-tonne Fuso Canter of the year in support of its growing arboricultural business. The truck is the first all-new 2022 Canter sold by Mertrux Truck & Van. Established by husband-and-wife team Paul and Karen Taylor in 2013, English Oak offers comprehensive service for local authorities and private clients, including 24-hour emergency call-outs. After disappointing performance from two rival brands, the Taylors landed on Fuso’s Canter, which Paul had previous experience with, as their vehicle of choice. The firm acquired its first Canter in January, adding the second this autumn.

    About The Fuso Canter

Both of English Oak’s Canters are 3C13 models with 3.0-litre, 130-horsepower (96-kilowatt) turbodiesel engines that produce 350 newton-metres (258 pounds-foot) of torque. The 2022 model is equipped with a new compact exhaust system that helps it meet the Euro 6 Step E emissions standard. The new Canter is also distinguished by its redesigned cab. Improved interior insulation reduces noise and reinforced rear underrun protection minimises impact in the event of an accident.

The trucks are fitted with custom high-sided tipping bodies from PD Stevens & Sons. The bodies have lockable toolboxes with roller shutter doors on both sides behind the cabs. There are additional toolboxes under the chassis and the bodies have split, side-hinged back doors. Fixed roofs made from chequer plate allow the trucks to carry ladders and have an opening at the rear to collect wood chippings. The roofs are also angled at both sides to prevent vegetation from catching corners.

    A Satisfied Customer

“I’ve always had a soft spot for the Canter,” says Paul. “Business is good and I was so pleased with the first that I went back to Mertrux shortly afterwards and ordered a second. For heavy work such as tree surgery, the Canter is definitely built for the job. Not only does it feel very sturdy, but the load capacity is better than most trucks out there.

“It also has a fantastic turning circle, which is another big advantage, in that we’re now able to get through gates and into tight spots when working off-road that we’d never have managed with our previous vehicle. In fact, I’d say the Canter is pretty well perfect for what we do.”
