Brakes, part of the global foodservice supplier Sysco, recently acquired its first emissions-free Daf LF Electric for multi-temperature deliveries from its depot in Reading. The addition of the LF Electric is line with Sysco’s plan to stop adding diesel trucks to its fleet by 2030 and Brakes’ goal of a low-carbon fleet dominated by electric vehicles.

The new truck sports “Climate Stripes” livery as part of the #ShowYourStripes campaign created by Professor of Climate Science Ed Hawkins at the University of Reading. The design depicts the change in average global temperature from 1850 to 2021 to illustrate the alarming increase in recent decades. The LF Electric will do its part to fight climate change by eliminating an estimated 52 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

“The distribution sector is starting to embrace zero-emissions, and we’re confident the new Daf gives us the right solution to provide productivity benefits,” says Brakes Head of Fleet Paul Vernon.

    The LF Electric

The 19-tonne (21-U.S.-ton) Daf LF Electric can handle payloads of approximately 8 t (8.8 U.S. t), matching the rest of Brakes’ 18-t (19.8-U.S.-t) GVW diesel-powered Daf LF 260 fleet. The truck is fitted with an FK2 refrigeration unit from Frigoblock that provides two-zone temperature control, with frozen in the front and chilled in the rear. The FK2 pulls energy from the battery pack and will eliminate 17 t (18.7 U.S. t) of carbon emissions annually on its own.

When it is time for a charge, the LF Electric’s batteries can go from 20 to 80% in one hour with a 650-volt DC, 150-kilowatt charger or from 0 to 80% in two hours. (Photo courtesy of Daf.)

The Daf LF Electric is powered by a 250-kilowatt (335 horsepower) electric motor that generates 1,200 newton-metres (885 pounds-foot) of torque. The LFP (lithium ferrophosphate) battery pack has a single charge range of 280 kilometres (174 miles). When it is time for a charge, the batteries can go from 20 to 80% in one hour with a 650-volt DC, 150-kW charger or from 0 to 80% in two hours. The LF Electric can also be charged via the onboard charging overnight via a 400-V AC 3 phase electrical supply. The AC charging the battery can go from 20 to 80% in 6.5 hours or 0 to 100% in 12 hours.
