Dutch refuse collector Cure Waste Management recently received the first seven of 14 Daf CF Electric refuse trucks for use in Eindhoven, Valkenswaard and Geldrop-Mierlo. The fully electric, zero-emission 6x2 trucks are equipped with electric VDL side loaders, which automatically empty waste containers into the bodies of the CF Electrics. Six of the CF Electrics that will arrive in the future will be equipped with fully electric rear loaders and the seventh will have a cleaning system to clean surface and underground waste containers.

Cure Waste Management, a joint venture between authorities in the three communities, collects refuse, including paper, plastic, glass, and organic waste as well as general waste, from nearly 150,000 households. The company operates four recycling centres in the Eindhoven region.

    Working Sustainably

The Daf CF Electric has a 210-kilowatt (282-horsepower) electric motor powered by a 350-kilowatt-hour battery pack for a range of approximately 200 kilometres (124 miles). The batteries can reach a full charge from zero in 75 minutes with a fast charger (250 kW/400 amps). The trucks also benefit from regenerative braking that recaptures energy from each of the trucks’ many daily stops. The electric motor acts as a generator, producing energy for storage in the batteries each time the vehicle slows. The CF Electric has three levels of regenerative braking, which are controlled by a steering column stalk, to increase the truck’s range and reduce wear on the brakes.

Daf says the CF Electric’s driver information panel delivers all the information drivers need at a glance, including current battery levels and both average and current energy usage. (Photo courtesy of Daf.)

“We try to work in as sustainable a manner as possible, and this series of fully electric CF Electric trucks matches perfectly with that ambition,” says Cure Waste Management Managing Director Frans van Strijp. “The trucks ensure quiet and zero-emission collection of garbage, which is great news for the residents of Eindhoven, Valkenswaard, and Geldrop-Mierlo. And our brand-new charging station allows us to rapidly charge multiple vehicles at the same time.”
