East Yorkshire-Based Burton Roofing Grows Fleet By Four New Volvo FM Crane Trucks

Following a successful yearlong stint operating a Volvo FE 4x2 truck, East Yorkshire-based Burton Roofing decided to add four new FM models to its 53-vehicle fleet. Three of the FMs are 6x2 rigids with D11K engines that produce 330 horsepower (246 kilowatts) and 1,600 newton-metres (1,180 pounds-foot) of torque, and one is an 8x2 FM tax axle rigid with a D11K engine that produces 380 hp (283 kW) and 1,800 N-m (1,327.6 lbf-ft) of torque. All four share the same 12-speed I-Shift automated transmission and feature brick grab cranes. Burton Roofing ordered the trucks on five-year leases and plans to run them for around 100,000 kilometres (62,137 miles) per year.

    Volvo Meets Burton Roofing’s Standards

“We were changing the spec of the trucks last year, so it seemed the ideal time to try something new. Of all the manufacturers out there the only one I knew could match up to our usual high standards was Volvo,” says Paul Hattee, managing director of Burton Roofing. “We ordered the FE and it made a big impact – the driver really liked it and the feedback from the depot was spot-on. So, when we were in the market for the four bigger trucks, we had no hesitation in opting for Volvo again. We’ve only had positive comments from the drivers since opting for Volvo, which is a good sign. They’re not usually shy in letting me know if something’s not right!”

    Volvo FM Details

Volvo FM trucks are available with standard day, sleeper, and low sleeper cabs or with Globetrotter or Globetrotter LXL cabs. There are three Euro 6 engine options, including the D11K, D13K, and G13C, ranging from 330 to 500 hp (246 to 373 kW) and producing between 1,600 and 2,500 N-m (1,180 and 1,844 lbf-ft) of torque. There is also a version of the FM that runs on liquefied natural gas, which puts off fewer emissions while producing between 420 and 460 hp (313.2 and 343 kW) and between 2,100 and 2,300 N-m (1,550 and 1,696 lbf-ft) of torque.

I-Shift transmissions come as standard on all Volvo FM trucks and can be paired with any of a wide range of available software packages tailored to distribution, construction, long-haul trucking, and heavy-duty transport applications. Other technologies on this range include adaptive cruise control, lane-changing support, electronic stability program, and driver alert support.
