International fashion retailer Primark recently added 10 new IVECO Stralis NP 460 natural gas-powered trucks to its UK transport operations as part of its Primark Cares initiative to reduce carbon emissions. As part of the same programme, Primark purchased a number of new Longer Semi-Trailers (LST) in August. The Stralis tractor units were chosen in part for their fuel range of up to 1,600 kilometres (994 miles) running solely on liquid natural gas. Bio-LNG is safe, non-corrosive, and non-toxic, but is stored at 160 degrees centigrade below freezing. Drivers were given extensive education on safety guidelines for refuelling. The trucks will be fuelled at Gasrec’s Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal site at Crick in Northamptonshire.

IVECO reports that the new trucks also run quieter, just 71decibels on the PIEK quiet truck scale, which will allow them to operate in urban areas in Quiet Mode without breaching nighttime noise restrictions.

    About The Stralis NP 460

The Stralis NP 460 runs solely on Bio-Liquified Natural Gas to reduce fuel consumption by up to 15% and produces 99% less particulate matter compared to diesel. The truck features a 12-speed HI-TRONIX automated transmission and the advanced IVECO HI-CRUISE GPS-based predictive drive system. Its 460-horsepower (343-kilowatt), 12.9-litre CURSOR 13 Natural Power engine offers service intervals of 90,000 kilometres to minimise downtime. A full suite of exterior cameras with an internal monitor along with a front and side scan system to warn of hidden obstacles provide greater visibility and safety. The Stralis also has an automatically adjusting Aerodyne Global Aeromatic air deflector to push air up and over the 5-m-high trailers to reduce drag and increase fuel efficiency.

"We chose the IVECO Stralis NP for its ability to run purely on Bio-LNG, its impressive range, strong performance during vehicle trials and early feedback from drivers who appreciated its comfort and performance,” says Primark Regional Transport Manager Ant Franks. “We are really proud to bring these new, high-quality trucks into our transport fleet and further boost the sustainability of our transport operations as we continue to help make a more positive impact on the environment."
