Purpose-Built FUSO Canter Lets AW Treecare Work More Efficiently

“It quickly became apparent that none could match the FUSO Canter as an all-round package—it really did tick all our boxes,” says AW Treecare proprietor Alex Walker. (Photo courtesy of Mercedes-Benz.)

AW Treecare recently decided it was time for a new vehicle. After nine years of operation, the faithful 4x4 truck AW Treecare relied upon could no longer effectively meet the growing arboriculture specialist’s needs.

“I had a set of criteria in mind when I began the search for a new vehicle, the most important of which was a worthwhile increase in carrying capacity,” says AW Treecare proprietor Alex Walker. “The new truck had to be tough enough to stand up to a rigorous working life, and have a comfortable cab able to carry three people without being too cramped.”

AW Treecare selected a new FUSO Canter, complete with a specialised high-sided tipping body with lockable tool and equipment compartments.

    Transport & Tow

The 3.5-tonne (3.85-U.S.-ton) FUSO Canter 3C15 can also tow trailers with gross weights up to 3.5 t, thanks in part to the 3.0-litre, 110-kilowatt (150-horsepower) turbodiesel engine. “The engine pulls really well, even with full loads on the truck and trailer,” Walker says. “We’re delighted with the new truck, which is entirely fit for purpose. The cab is roomy enough to carry three people in comfort, and we also specified air conditioning, which is very welcome when you’re working in heavy protective gear on a hot day.”

The 3C15’s powertrain delivers 370 newton-metres of torque, and with FUSO’s variable turbine technology, the high torque is also available at low engine speeds to combine economy with pulling power.

    Mobility

The ability to haul crew, as well as wood chippers, stump grinders, and other arboriculture equipment was at the top of the firm’s list of priorities, but the ability bring that equipment close to the jobsite was also a deciding factor for AW Treecare.

“A modest footprint coupled with a high degree of manoeuvrability was important, as we often have to get on and off tight domestic driveways, and so, too, was an automatic gearbox,” says Walker. “I considered several contenders but it quickly became apparent that none could match the FUSO Canter as an all-round package—it really did tick all our boxes.”
