New 7.5-Tonne FUSO Canter Fuels Delivery Of Coal & Firewood

Posted On: Tuesday 21 September 2021

“The Canter has proved to be a highly reliable workhorse and is now firmly established as our preferred 7.5-tonner,” says Chris Caws, transport manager at KG Smith & Son. (Photo courtesy of Mercedes-Benz.)

KG Smith & Son’s latest delivery vehicle is the fifth FUSO Canter in the fleet, and the 7.5-tonne (8.2-U.S.-ton) Canter has become a favourite of the Northampton-based fuel supplier. “Payload is crucial as coal and solid fuel products are heavy,” says Transport Manager Chris Caws. “We’ll get 4 t on the back of our latest Canter—more traditional 7.5-t trucks wouldn’t get close to that. The Canter has proved to be a highly reliable workhorse and is now firmly established as our preferred 7.5-tonner.”

    A Footprint For Village Deliveries

Getting up and down alleyways is a regular part of the job for KG Smith & Son drivers, and the Canter’s compact footprint and tight turning circle are a big bonus when operating in tight quarters. “We’ll get a Canter into the sort of space for which you’d normally have to use a van, yet it will carry three times more product,” explains Caws. “The fact that it’s so manoeuvrable makes life a lot easier for our drivers.”

The company’s newest FUSO Canter is one of three trucks distributing coal and other fuel products. KG Smith & Son’s oldest Canter is built with higher sides and a tail lift, making it more suitable for gas bottle transport. The firm has another FUSO Canter equipped with a crane that often distributes bags of logs, gravel, topsoil, and other landscaping and garden products.
