Rigid Multi-Axle DAF Trucks Provide Manoeuvrability For Municipal Jobs

The recent Letsrecycle Live event in Birmingham provided an excellent opportunity for DAF Trucks to demonstrate its range of vocational vehicles. DAF displayed two of its tridems on loan from local service providers, including a CF 410 8x4 from AR Richards and a CF 450 8x2 from Anglian Water. A 16-tonne (17.6-U.S.-ton) LF 240 rigid was also on hand to showcase a Macpac food waste body.

    AR Richards’ CF 410

Based on the FAW chassis, this CF 410 features a 10-mt (11-U.S.-t) front axle, a double-drive bogie, and rear-steer capability. AR Richards selected the FAW chassis because the waste management specialist must drive on and off road, and this FAW configuration is able to balance off-road traction while maintaining manoeuvrability. The CF 410 is equipped with Hillend Engineering’s Powerlink 19-cubic-metre (25-cubic-yard) rear-loading compaction body. In front of this body, the CF 410 features a side-loading pod to let the vehicle separately collect food waste or glass, while the rear compartment is reserved for dry- and mixed-recycling. The separate collection pods avoid contamination and optimise AR Richards’ productivity during pickups and drop-offs.

    Anglian Water’s CF 450

This tridem FAQ model features three steering axles and a water tanker body. The multi-axle steering configuration is popular with service providers in need of manoeuvrability when dealing with heavy rearmost loads. The new CF 450 truck is one of four for the drinking water supplier and is designed to provide water during disruptions, such as when a water main is broken. Anglian Water can use the truck to connect directly to the water main and pump water using a separate onboard engine.

    The LF 230

Rounding out the tridem DAF trucks, the LF 230 rigid is commonly used for municipal applications, such as road sweeping and refuse collection. The Macpac 110 food waste body features an 11-cu m (14.4-cu y) waste body and a bin-rinse system so crew can wash out customer bins without the need for a second truck. The demonstration LF 230 boasts a 500-kilogram (1,100-pound) lifter on the side that’s compatible with most bin sizes, including four-wheel roll-top bins.
