More than 90% of the trucks operating out of Owens Group’s Carrington depot in Greater Manchester will soon be Volvo FH 460 Globetrotter tractor units. Volvo Trucks dealer Thomas Hardie Commercials secured the 60-truck order after providing Owens Group with a seed truck.
“We never buy a truck until the product has proven itself within our operation and with our drivers,” says Andy Williams, head of fleet and compliance at Owens Group. “Thomas Hardie Commercials had full faith in the FH to deliver, and it didn’t disappoint—coming out top on fuel and getting a great reception from our drivers in the process.”
The New Fleet
Thomas Hardie Commercials plans to deliver the Volvo FH 460 tractor units in three tranches over the next nine months. The high-spec fleet features Volvo’s Globetrotter luxury sleeper with a 33-litre (1.16-cubic-foot) under-bunk freezer and 245 L (8.65 cu ft) of rear cab upper storage. The amenities of the Globetrotter cab provide long-haul comfort for Owens Group drivers. The fleet upgrade marked Owens Group’s first Volvo order since 2005, and driver comfort was a driving factor behind the logistics and warehousing company’s return to Volvo.
“From day one, the whole team at Thomas Hardie demonstrated a strong desire to win our business and build a long-term relationship, investing a lot of time to tailor a truly premium-spec new fleet,” says Williams. “It’s exciting to see the first new trucks entering service, and we are confident they will help us to attract and retain the very best drivers.”
The Volvo FH Series
The Volvo FH is available with your choice of 13-L D13K or G13C engines, which produce between 420 and 540 horsepower (313 and 403 kilowatts) and from 2,100 to 2,600 newton-metres (1,548 to 1,917 pounds-foot) of torque. The trucks in Owens Group’s order boast the 460-HP (343-kW) D13K, which generates 2,300 N-m (1,696 lbs.-ft.) of torque.
